RIVAL TO BUSES
RAIL-CAR COMPETITION. CITY COUNCIL’S PROTEST. Competition with the municipal buses created by the use of the railcar services for transporting passengers between tho business area and Terrace End was the subject of a report by the traffic manager (Mr H. J. Smith) to the Palmerston North City Council, last evening. The traffic manager stated that the rail-car fare was 3d, compared with the bus tare of 4d. He had mentioned the matter to the Transport Licensing Authority chairman, who had said he would go into it, and Mr Smith suggested that a letter be forwarded to the General Manager of Railways asking that no passenger be picked up for journeys within the city area. This practice could be stopped by fixing a minimum fare as far as Ash hurst.
It was pointed out also by Mr Smith that the railcar stopped for passengers at the Post Office. This set the crossing lights flashing and warning hells ringing while it was there, holding up motor traffic and causing congestion on busy nights. The council decided, on the motion of Cr. AY. B. Cameron (chairman of the transit committee), seconded by Cr. AY. B. Tennent, to forward to the General Manager of Railways a letter pointing out the position.
