OTAKI MEETING.

A SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE. WEST TOR CHIEF WINNER. ROYAL BENGAL’S SPRINT. Although the weather was unfavourable, a' misty rain with a strong, cold wind making matters unpleasant, there was a large attendance at the Otaki Maori Racing Club’s spring meeting on Saturday, and the totalisator returns showed the satisfactory increase of £1713 10s on last year, £8940 10s going through the machine compared with £7227. The racing was excellent, with a number of close finishes to add to the excitement. The public had a bad day, not a single favourite being returned a winner. On the other hand several rank outsiders got home, and despite the small fields paid big prices. Tne principal event, the Ling Memorial Stakes provided an excellent race with West Tor coming determinedly at the finish to snatch a wellmerited victory front Round Score. The open seven furlongs event was won by Royal Bengal, sixth favourite in a field of six.

The management of Mr N. AViniata (secretary) and a capable band of officials was all that could be desired, and the starter (Mr A. Vincent) got the horses away in excellent line. In the Ling Memorial Stakes a mishap occurred when Lapel fell on entering the straight, A. Jenkins, rider of West Tor, was suspended for a month as the result of an inquiry into the occurrence. Following another inquiry J % Leach was cautioned for allowing Terry to come across on AVindward uuring the running of the Mema Hack Handicap. HURDLES TO AVAR ACE. There were only five runners in the Kapiti Hack Hurdles, and the Foxton winner iouSsipof was made a good favourite. The Grand Knight gelding never got near the front and was labouring in the rear to finish a very moderate fourth. The winner turned up in AVar Ace, who was well ridden by the Awapuni jockey, C. Thomson. Miss Hushabye tried to win all the way, but she began to drift in the run home and Otauru King passed her. He in turn was challenged by War Ace and these two fought out a hard -finish,. with the latter getting the verdict by a head. Royal King was last. AVar Ace finished very well and Otauru King showed improvement. Miss Hushabye made a good impression on her first appearance over hurdles and will do better. GOLDEN RIDGE SUCCESSFUL. The Laclcham gelding Golden Ridge was quickest to find nis feet in the Pulii Maiden Plate and he was never headed, running home an easy winner by three lengths. He had previously shown promise and as it was his first race of the season he should be seen to further advantage in future. The favourite Liane was third into the straight after lying well back early, but she lacked a finishing run and drifted back to fourth. Awapuni stables provided second and third horses in Slirth and Old Surrey. Both went improved races on their previous showings. Mirth was nearest the winner tor most of the journey. Old Surrey finished strongly and was only a short neck further back. Gay Mulla went a good race, and Mazzini was close up to the placed horses. Clear Vision was badly left and Geelong was slow away. AIRING’S EASY AVIN. . Airing spreadeagled the field in the Katihiku Hack Handicap for, getting away well, he led all the v. ay and finished, pulling up, five lengths m ßustem was well back early and there were four in front of him entering the straight, but he mowed down the • others with telling strides and was an easy second, from Batagonia, who was behind the winner when the run home commenced. Terry was fourth and Export fifth. Cricket was interfered with at the top and he was the last to finish. He was going well when the interference took place. Export, the favourite, was fifth. AVEST TOR’S SUCCESS. With half a mile to go in the Ling Memorial Stakes AVest Tor had only Might behind him, but from thence onwards the Opaki-trained gelding commenced a run that took him into the lead less than a hundred yards from home, and he prevailed by a length at the finish. It was a fine race with Round Score making the pace until the winner caught him. He ran a bit wide coming into the straight. I he Awapuni gelding is racing in improved style and he should not have long to wait now. Gay Boy, Lapel, and Might were slow away. Gay Boy got up to third place entering the straight, but failed to .improve his.- position in the run ■ home. Hazoor carried his 9.7 well into fourth place and will be improved by the race. Sunee, a Mitchelson Cup candidate, made a creditable show ing. Half a mile from home he was in close attendance on Round Score in the lead, and he was'still there coming into the straight, but he then drifted back to fifth place. He should be all the better for the race. The favourite Lapel fell entering the straight when making a forward move, but neither the jockey (R. AV. Savage) nor the horse was injured. OUTSIDER AVINS. After leading to the straight in the Tuan Handicap, Royal Routine cried enough, and Fulojoy took up the running, only to tire over the last bit, and Lord Moutoa finishing strongly passed her to score comfortably, . with Royal Routine third. The winner was successful at Foxton and is capable of further improvement. Fulojoy looked the winner at the distance,' but she began to drift, just holding on long enough to get second. Severe was fourth. The going did not suit her and ,she never got into a winning position. GLADIUM’S SURPRISE. AVith an advantage of two lengths entering the straight, Lifeguard looked the winner of the Pahiko Hack Handicap, but he could not run on and fourth was his best. Five furlongs appears to be his distance. Gladiuin, the winner, who was recently sold by Mr Ebb Simpson to Mr 11. C. Blenkhorn, of -Levin, was having his first start in his new colours. He was always handy and finished full of running. He was tile outsider. A feature of the race was the finishing effort of Finneslio. The Defoe gelding’s position looked hopeless at one stage, but once he hit the straight he came away fast,' but failed by half a length to catch the winner. Eara, having her first race for a long time, put up a sound performance to get third, and looks an early winner. The Sandwichman and Lavish never got. near the front. TERRY AVINS AT SECOND START. Making her second appearance of the day, Terry won the Mema Hack Handicap in fine style. She also won

second timo np at Foxton. AVareln made most of the running, but could not carry on over the last stretch and finished third. Taumau was prominent until the real business commenced and he drifted back to fourth. AVindward went a sound raee for second. He is racing very consistently and a win for him cannot be much longer delayed. Sir Ronald was last away, and made np a lot of ground to be fifth. Nightrunner ran soundly and should do his trainer a good turn soon. ANOTHER OUTSIDER AVINS.

The rank outsider Royal Bengal scored an nll-the-way victory in the final event, winning very easily. His for mhas not been good, this being his first success for nearly two years. Snowball went another of his good races for second, while Jubilee Soiig was a fair third. The favourite Deficit had, every chance, being fourth at the half-mile and third into the straight, but from then on he made a bad showing and finished last. Full Throttle was fourth, with Hunting Lodge next.
