1). C. COLLINS LEADS IN QUALI EYING ROUNDS.

WANGANUI, Oct. 2

Recording a first round score of 77, the best of the morning, D. C. Collins, of Featherston, improved his score in the second round to head the aggregates in the two qualifying rounds played at Belmont yesterday for the Wanganui provincial amateur championship. His afternoon round of 75 enabled him to finish one stroke ahead of V. B. Haworth, who returned a 74 in the afternoon, the best of the second round, but his morning round cost him 79, his aggregate of 153 comparing with the 152 compiled by Collins. No fewer than ten previous winners of the championship competed in yesterday’s qualifying rounds, and between them tlnjpy covered more than twenty years of Belmont history. Previous winners of the title competing were: —J. Goss (1914 and 1924), Gonville Saunders (1917 and 1922), Imlay Saunders (1923), J. Harold (1919, 1920, and 1921), R. L. McNiveu (1925). D. C. Collins (1928), L. Cathro (1929 and 1931), W. O’Callaghan (1932), V. P. Haworth (1934), and F. C. Hutchison (1935). Thus Collins is in line to repeat his 1928 success, and Haworth has once again qualified, making his record some five years in succession in the qualifying list, and he has been in the final in three of the last four years. K. S. Glendinning (Palmerston North) also qualified for the championship with a score of 160, his rounds being 83 and 77. Qualifying in the Belmont Handicap, V. "j. Stichbury (Feilding) returned a card reading 82—87—169. P. H. Leonard (Marton), 86—88 — 174; and L. Gorton (Feilding), 87— 90—177. . „ In the Balgowrie Handicap K. G. Salmond (Feilding) qualified with 96—89—185. Other competitors who participated in the qualifying rounds of the provincial championship included J. Graham (Feilding), A. E. Hansel, J. W. Jones, W. Peterson, and H. E. Fairey (Palmerslon North), and K. G. Salmond (Feilding).
