SALE OF WORK.

ST. PETER’S ANGLICAN CHURCH. For the purpose of raising funds for the painting and repairing of the churcli, the annual sale of work, conducted by the Ladies’ Guild of St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Terrace End, was held yesterday, in the church hall. The official ceremony was performed at 2.30 by the Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford) associated with him being tho Mayoress (Mrs Mansford), Rev. Mr Ramson (the vicar) and Mi's Ramson. In introducing the Mayor, Mr Ramson stated that the church considered it an honour to have Mr and Mrs Mansford with them that afternoon, more especially as they were old and respected members of the Church. He also desired to thank all those who had contributed towards the success of the appeal. At the outset Mr Mansford expressed appreciation of the opportunity extended him to open tho sale of work, which was rendered more acceptable by tho fact that for many years he had taken a keen interest in the welfare of the Church. He was pleased to see that the ladies were working just as hard for the various objectives as they bad done in the past and felt sure that success would attend their efforts.

“To-day, possibly more than at any other time,” continued Mr Mansford, “wo find wherever we turn tho necessity of the Church and its influence in keeping the people united. A man is as he thinks in his heart, and the thoughts that are in his mind will be expressed in his daily actions. Is it not a fact that we all travel the same road, enjoy similar pleasures and bask In the same sun ? Clearly, then, the difference between individuals lies in their outlook on life, and one must be careful to see that that outlook is exerted in the right direction. A man’s train of thought decides his line of action and it is the duty of the clergy, businessmen and public men, to put that train of thought on tho right track; otherwise our civilisation must fall. If we don’t heed the warnings, then archaeologists of the future will dig up our fallen civilisation as to-day we are finding traces of similar crumblings. IVe fail to perceive what is taking place around us because the changes are so close, but as other great nations ltavo fallen so may we.” In conclusion, the speaker expressed th© hope that the sale would be a most successful one from all points of view and that any objective the church had in view would be reached. On .behalf of the parishioners, the church organist (Mr H. S. Porteous) proposed a vote of thanks to Mr and Mrs Mansford and this was carried by acclamation. At a suitable opportunity Elaine Hornblow presented Mrs Mansford and Mrs Ramson with attractive posies. , Parishioners had made generous donations of produce, and it was confidently expected that the response to the appeal would enable the work proposed to bo undertaken at an early date. .
