BOWLING

MAN A WAT U CENTRE. THE ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Manawatu Bowling Centre was held yesterday afternoon. Mr J. A. Nash (representing the Dannevirkc Bowling Club) presided. There were also present: —Messrs J. K. Baton, R. W. H. Ramsay and E. L. Arnott (Palmerston North Bowling Club), R. Bly (AYoodville), J. Barltrop, J. Bartholomew (Eeilding), J. M. Crcucher (Bulls), H. Bovis (Shannon), A. AV. Just, A. Cooksley (Takaro), G. N. Stephenson, H. Denton (Levin), C. N. Rabone, P. S- Larcomb (Northern), AV. Hunter (Manawatu), G. H. Hodd, It. Gregory (Pahiatua), J. M. Gordon, J. J. O’Shea (Terrace End), N. H. Nash (Eketahuna), and G. Buckman (Oroua). The New South AA'ales Bowling Centre wrote thanking the secretary, president, and centre for hospitality extended on the occasion of the touring players’ visit last season. It was hoped that an opportunity would be presented for similar hospitality to be extended to New Zealand bowlers.— Received. Replying to a question on the point, the New Zealand Bowling Association advised that the information supplied to members of the council regarding the number of votes cast at the election of councillors was supplied by direction of the council. —Received. The AVoodville Club wrote drawing attention to the condition of the Takaro Club’s green on the occasion of the last champion of champions singles competition, it not being cut and rolled.—The chairman said he thought the green had been in very good order. Mr Bly remarked that Mr Forbes had said that the players had bad to wait for the green to be cut and rolled. He had had no fault to find at all with the green, only that the greenkeeper did not know the tournament was to be held there. The letter was received. TOURNAMENT RULES.

The Palmerston North Bowling Club forwarded a letter stating that a recommendation had been passed at the club’s annual meeting that rule 12 of tournament play be enforced strictly. (The rule applies to the composition of rinks with regard to club membership.) The chairman, whose rink at the Easter tournament contained a substitute, and had won the tournament, said he had not been able to secure another player, so had included one from another club. That latitude had been extended to other rinks. Mr Arnott said that the letter was not directed at the chairman personally. The chairman said the matter had been thrashed out two years ago with headquarters. He had applied to the centre to play a member of another club and had been granted permission. Mr O’Shea moved that the letter be received and referred to the executive. Mr Gordon seconded the motion. Mr N. H. Nash said the practice complained of was seen even in the Dominion and Rotorua tournaments — for one member, but not for two. Mr Arnott moved that rule 12 of the local tourney rules be deleted from all future tourneys. The amendment was not seconded and the motion was passed. The secretary (Mr A. F. AA r imsett) read the remits forwarded to tho annual meeting of the New Zealand Bowling Association and reported on the result of the deliberations. EASTER TOURNAMENT.

The Shannon Bowling Club wrote suggesting that the Easter tournament be so arranged that finality be readied by Easter Monday night. The chairman doubted if that could be done, but said tho tourney could be finished on the Tuesday if eight games were played instead of nine. The time limit would have to apply at least to the Monday’s play. Most of the outside players came prepared to remain, if necessary, he said, answering a statement, by Mr Hunter that the ‘‘outside” players had to be considered . Mr Eaton moved that no action be taken. Most of the clubs were well satisfied, he said. Mr Ramsay seconded the motion. Mr Bovis said many of the players could play on three days but not on four. Mr Itabone moved an amendment (Mr O’Shea seconding) that the letter be referred to the executive. Mr Hodd said that tiro centre (formed of city delegates) would then have to make the decision. The matter was not one really for tho executive alone. Mr Burltrop said that not all bowlers were able to go to a tournament for a holiday. Mr Gordon pointed out that the 40liour week would now apply. For this and tho next two seasons the matter would not be one to worry the centre. It would spoil the tourney to shorten it. Mr Hunter thought that endeavours should be made to secure more outside entries. Last year there were 11 and in 1920 42. The chnirman doubted the correctness of the figures for 1920, saying they probably applied to dubs ‘‘outside of Ealinerston rvorth.” The amendment was lost and the motion for the taking of no action was passed. CHAIRMAN’S' ADDRESS. Moving the adoption of the report (previously published) the chairman •aid the year’s operations had shown a profit of £24 19s Id. “This has been brought about through additional entries and cutting down expenses in connection with the tournaments,” he proceeded. “As you know, we dispensed with the smoke concert, but personally I think we should do something in the way of entertainment for the visitors. Our main object should be to keep the tournaments popular and induce visitors to come to them. Tho Foxton Club is deserving of congratulations for its success. Tn the champion of champions pairs competition Messrs Rangflieuia and Thompson have won three times and the Foxton Club has also won the rinks twice in succession. Mr G. Stephenson and his rink are to be congratulated for having won the veterans’ event twice. I think we should point out to the New Zealand Bowling Association that the Dominion tourney, commencing this season on January 4, interferes with clubs which hold New Year tournaments.” Special mention was mnde by the speaker of the visit to Auckland and Hamilton, where hospitality had been showered on the visitors. Congratulations were due to the Wooclvillc Club for sending a large number of players on that occasion. This year the centre could play matches between Dannevirke, .Pahintun and Eketnhuna clubs, and Palmerston North, Feilding and Bulls clubs, and also between the other clubs, Levin, Shannon and Foxton. The speaker congratulated the Northern and Terrace End Clubs on laying down new greens, and said that the acquisition of these- greens was gratifying because the #entre could thereby the better conduct its tournaments The sneaker th&tked the executive tor help and assisfAtice, the secretary for his

work, and the auditor (Mr AV. Hunter) for-his attention to these duties. The chairman also referred to the movement to form another bowling club at Hokowhitu. It would, he said, be an asset to the city. In conclusion Mr Nash expressed the opinion that it would be very desirable if a visit could be paid to the AA 7 airarapa again this year. Mr Just seconded the motion. Mr Gordon considered that there was no need for the centre to carry a big balance as funds could easily be secured through the levy on players through the clubs. For the next Easter tournament arrangements should be made for additional refreshment to what was given last year. Recent tournaments had seen the saving of money in that direction, but it was not advisable. Mr Paton also thought a big credit balance was unnecessary. No other sport supplied liquid refreshment, said Mr Hunter. No other centre provided it. At football, tennis and cricket liquid refreshments were not provided. Although it should not be largely increased, the balance was a good safety measure. The centre should watch the balance carefully and keep it. Replying to Mr O’Shea, the secretary said the liquid refreshment had cost about £ls, and the smoke concert £lO, for the last tournaments at which they had been supplied. Mr Larcomb said that to cut the entry fee down to 7s 6d would bring increased entries. That would give all persons an opportunity of playing. The chairman said that would bring a reduction of 26 6d a player and costs would increase with higher entries. The entry fee had been reduced from 12s 6d to 10s. Mr Ramsay thought that refreshments should be provided. This added to the hospitable feeling of the tournament. „ , , Mr Hodd supported Mr Ramsay, but Mr Denton did not consider that the tournament suffered from any lack of hospitality without the refreshments. Mr Bartholomew said he had noticed how well the last tournament had been run. There had been a very line leeling between the players and that showed they were being looked after. Air N. H. Nash supported the view taken by Messrs Hodd and Gordon. It would be a wise thing to go back to the former arrangement. Air Gordon moved that a reasonable amount of liquid refreshment be supplied at the two tournaments. 'Die motion was seconded by Air Hodd. The motion was carried by 10 votes to 8. Mr Barltrop suggested that this year, in view of the amount of tho balance, tho centre should remit the levies on the clubs. Air Denton suggested that this year the bowl-tester pay a visit to the Levin Club. There were 60 members and practically all their.bowls required testing. Mr O’Shea said that the testing apparatus was bulky, but it could lie transported to Levin. It would probably be cheaper, however, to send the bowls to Palmerston North. The chairman said the matter would be gone into, also the cost of sending bowls from Levin to Palmerston North, and of sending the tester and the apparatus to Levin. The report was then adopted. OFFICERS ELECTED.

The following officers were elected Patron, Mr H. P. Horne; president, Mr J. A. Nash; vice-presidents, Messrs J. J. O’Shea, G. H. Hodd, and J. K. Paton; secretary, Air A. F. AVimsett; auditor, Air AA ; . Hunter. GENERAL. It was decided that the New Year pairs tournament be held, the trophies to be the same as last year, £l2. Mr Arnott urged that the centre executive be a larger number than last year. There would not be more than 15 delegates from the clubs, lie said. The chairman remarked that the centre’s principal business was to arrange for tournaments. The representatives had done good work. Mr Gordon thought that to have an executive formed of a delegate from every club would be unworkable. Mr Arnott said that to have delegates from all clubs would be conducive to a greater understanding of the centre’s business. On the motion of Air Gordon, it was decided to have the executive composed of delegates from city clubs as before, and the following were appointed:—Messrs Gordon, Arnott, Larcomb, Cooksley and Hunter. It was decided to hold the Easter tournament, the trophies to be the same at at the last tournament. The president brought up the matter of the champion of champions tournament, and Mr Rabone moved that for rinks, pairs, and singles the competitions bo conducted on a three-zone principle, the final games to be played in Palmerston North on a Saturday only. Air Ramsav thought the two-hte system was better, especially m regard to country players in singles and pairs. He moved that the touinaments he conducted on the two-life system, for singles and pairs, ‘'sudden death” for rinks, all to play at Palmerston North. The speaker put his views in the form of an amendment that the system be the same as last year. The amendment was earned. On the motion of the chairman it was decided to hold the veterans’ day. Air Bartholomew said the age minimum should be 70 years. It was not fair for a man of 65 years to play against another of 80. He moved that the minimum age he 70 years. Alt- Hodd seconded the •motion. Messrs Bly and Barltrop thought that such a decision might “kill” the tournament. Air Arnott counselled holding tne matter over until the clubs had been questioned as to the number of players over 70 who would take. part. The motion was carried. Air Stephenson moved that the executive consider that badges instead of medals lie given. A badge could be given to every player who took part. The motion was carried. Replying to a question, the chairman said that the bowl-tester would be commencing operations about December, as usual. The usual honorarium was granted to the secretary.

The following rink will represent Takaro at the Northern Club's opening on Saturday:—WagstalF, Ihle, E. Smith, A. Smith (skip).
