Addressing a Farmers' Union meeting at Pongaroa on "The Training and Care of the Sheep Dog.'’ Mr C. Thom, of Weber, said that the farmers in that district had some of the best hutitaway dogs in New Zealand. Mr D. R. Hall then pointed out that it was not generally known that these dogs were the progeny and descendants of a breed of dogs owned and worked by the present, chairman (Mr J. W. Murray) 30 years ago. Approximately half of the wool grown in Australia is produced in New South Wales, which pastures 53,327.000 sheep, the total for tlie whole of the Commonwealth being 109,768,000. Owing to convenience of transport a large part of the New South Wales clip is marketed in selling centres other than Sydney, but chiefly in Melbourne, Albury, and Adelaide. Last season the total quantity of the State’s supplies sold in those markets and also Geelong and Brisbane was 255,612 bales.

The price of potatoes has increased sharply over the past few days, says / an Auckland exchange. Merchants’ quotations varied considerably, reds ranging from £9 10s to £lO 5s a ton, through store, while whites arc selling . front £9 5s to £9 159 a ton, through store. Rates quoted at the beginning of last week were £8 17s 6d a ton. through store, for reds, and £8 2s 6d for whiles.
