AVELLINGTON, Sept. IC. Provision for acclimatisation societies to contribute toward the cost of fresh water fisheries research is made in the Fisheries Amendment Bill which was introduced by Governor-General’s message in the House to-night. In the terms of the Bill regulations may be made under the principal Act providing for the issue ot fishing licenses by acclimatisation societies at prescribed fees. The regulations may also require the societies to pay into the Consolidated Fund a portion of the aggregate license fees, and these moneys are to be apfilied by the Alinister of Alarine in defraying expenses incurred in research into fresh water fisheries.
Explaining the Bill, the Minister of Alarine (Hon. P. Fraser) said the license fee charged by acclimatisation societies for fishing was now £l. After the legislation was passed it was proposed by the societies to increase the license fee to £1 ss, and the fee would be uniform throughout New Zealand. Part of the fee would be devoted to fresh water fish research. It was important that the Bill should be passed within the next few days in order that the acclimatisation societies could have their new licenses printed.
