MANAWATU COMPETITIONS. TWO TEAMS IX THE LEAD. The Manawatu hockey competitions were continued yesterday at the Hokowhitu and Massey College grounds. On the former ground, in the senior division, Phoenix beat Woodville, 5 —2, and Combined Services beat Broadway B, B—l.8 —1. In the junior grade, Phoenix beat Massey College A, 15 —0, and Broadway beat Massey College B, 3 —2. At the College grounds, Broadway A beat College, 5- —2, lor senior points. PHOENIX BEAT WOODVILLE. Phoenix attacked early in their match with. Woodville and within a minute from the start had secured a goal, J. Morgan sending in from a scramble. Woodvillo rallied, however and became aggressive. By dint or harrying tactics they assumed control for a. period. K. •Strand was exceedingly unfortunate not to score, Ins shot, made after a splendid solo run, hitting the corner post and bouncing outside. Then followed some very fast ranging play, Phoenix having the territorial advantage. Morgan and Sutton both had attempts at goal iol Phoenix, but failed to score. Morgan was especially active in attack, but did not give his shots direction. \\ oodvilie appeared to have worn themselves down considerably after then first strong attack and Phoenix were now having the better of the game. Morgan was plaving outstandingly m their forwards and before the interval he had scored two more goals from fast runaways. Woodville brightened up before .the end of the half and Stitt succeeded in adding a point for his side The whistle sounded with the score 3—l in favour of Phoenix. After the interval Woodville attacked again strongly, repeating their tactics of the first half. They assumed momentary control, but good loin aid movements were frustrated bv the defence of the Phoenix backs, who wore always where they were required. Phoenix retaliated, Morgan taking the play down. He had a shot from just Inside the circle, but the ball was cleared without difficulty and taken upheld. The visitors, by working hard, at. last got within striking distance of the goal mouth and their chance came when Bone mishit a bouncing ball. SERVICES BE AT- BROAD WAY B. The Combined Services v. Broadway, B game was too one-sided to be very interesting, lor tliongn Broadway made some good attempts and showed fail- combination and stick work, tn.y wore definitely outclassed m all departments by Services In both spells the reds predominated and then lead of 5 goals to 1, which had been secured bv the interval, was further increased to B—l in the second ha t. Anthony was strong on the attack, securing five goals, while Smith netted one and Donaldson two. 1 m Broadway B, Fitzjohn was the onb one to score, doing so in the host ball. Messrs M. Levy and J. K. Baton were the umpires. MASSEY COLLEGE v. BROADWAY A. At Massey College the home team, who were playing on their own ground, were unexpectedly beaten by Broadway A who thus remain level with Phoenix at the head of the senior competition ladder. The game was a hard one but Broadway had just the little extra dash to carry them to victory. They had two good men in the front row' in D. O’Brien, who secured three goals and S'ailcn who netted two. Aleksey College’s three goals were all good ones, coining alter hard attacking movements. College have now been returned to fourth place on the ladder. JUNIOR MATCHES. With the two leading teams in the junior competition matched, the Massey College A v. Phoenix game was was naturally a keenly contested one, but the goal-shooting of E. Bills, who netted the three points for Phoenix, carried the day for his side. At the interval there was no score, but during tlie second spell Bills came to light very effectively and gave his team an early lead which they maintained without challenge. The game was controlled by Messrs M. Levy and H. Bone.

The Broadway v. Massey College B junior game was of a more even nature, resulting 3—2 in favour of the former team. Daly. Tipping, and Hincks scored for Broadway, and Bowie and Faulkner for College. The umpires were Messrs Lundy and Turner.
