DAIRY PAYMENTS.
TARANAKI CPITICISM. Per Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH, July 15. ' Too great a margin between tire price tor whey butter and the basic guaranteed price, and the heavy responsibility thrown on graders, are taut its seen in Taranaki in the .Government's scheme for dairy produce payments:. Favourable opinions, however, are generally expressed by the industry. One criticism of consequence is that the "scheme provides for too many differential payments, with a very fine distinction between classes, and with the price varying for every point of the grade. The graders’ responsiblity is much increased. There is a general feeling of doubt as to whether it is possible lor any grader in. New Zealand to compare two cheeses within a point of their respective qualities when they reach the London market. llie contention is that there should be tower payment classes though ditterential' payments are commended as an excellent encouragement to produce an article of better quality.
The subtraction of 9s 4d from the basic guaranteed price in payments for first-grade whey butter is criticised. It is contended that such a difference in price is not borne out by the comparative prices of whey and creamerv butter on the London market during tlie past few years, the average difference being between 4s and ss.
