SEALING OF ROADS

FEILDING TO AWAHURI. APPLICATION FOR SUBSIDY. The activities of the Alanawatu County Council in regard to the sealing of tho Feilding-Awahuri Road and Stewart’s Lino were the subject of an inquiry and a discussion at the monthly meeting of the County Council, at Sanson, yesterday. It was explained tlmt an application for the expenditure of £2OOO had been made and that it had been recommended for the favourable consideration of the Main Highways Board. The Feilding Chamber of Commerce wrote inquiring what action the chamber could take to assist the council in pressing claims for the sealing of both roads. The letter stated that it appeared as if the work had not been included in the list of operations to be carried out this year that would receive a subsidy from the Main Highways Board. The county clerk (Mr A. K. Drew - ) said he had advised the secretary of the chamber that the work had been approved by the No. 9 District Highways Council.

Cr. J. Boyce said the council had clone all it possibly could. Some thought that permission for the work had been absolutely refused, remarked Cr. AV. E. Pearce.

It was decided to reply that the estimates for the sealing had been included in the list of works to be carried out this year on which a subsidy would be paid and the work had been approved by the No. 9 District Highways Council. Accordingly, that recommendation had been forwarded to the Alain Highways Board for final sanction, in the usual way. Cr. J. H. Perrett, later in the meeting, suggested that a statement be made as to what the council had done, as the public would then know the full position. The county clerk said that an estimate had been supplied in which it was stated that the whole of the proposed work would require the expenditure of £IO,OOO. A request had been made for the granting oi a subsidy of £ISOO this year.

The engineer (Air H. V. Bond), discussing the matter further, said that an application lor the expenditure of X'ilUOO on the Feilding-Awa-huri Road and Stewart’s Line had been placed before the No. 9 District Highways Council. That had been granted. Only a sum of £2OOO had been put forward because it was considered that by the time the survey was completed and a contract tor the work let that would be all the expenditure involved in this year’s operations. The whole job would cost £IO,OOO, but the subsidy that had been asked for this year amounted to £ISOO. The provision of that sum had now been recommended by the district council. Cr. Perrett; That will not be much for this year. The chairman (Cr. AV. E. Barber) : Still it is a start, and we will have the work under way. The council is going on with the work, and that is the main thing.
