PATRIOTIC SOCIETY

ANNUAL MEETING. EX-SERVICEAIEN’S THANKS. The annual meeting of the Manawatu Patriotic Society was held last evening. Mr A. E. Alansford (the Alayoi) was m the chair and there were also

present Messrs J. H. Stevens, £). Collis, J. A. Nash, T. It. Hoddcr. J. W. ltutherfurd, 1). J. Jacobs, O. Monrad, J- Linklater, N. Blackmore, T. E. French, H. N. Cooke and W. 0. Rutherfurd. Apologies for unavoidable absence were received from Messrs C. Louisson and A. J. Graham. In moving the adoption of the report, already published, the chairman said it had so adequately covered the operations of the society that it had leit him very little to say. Fortunately, there had been an improvement in the economic position since last year. The word “unemployed.” lie commented, could ho used in many ways, in that a man earning 16s a day with a pick and shovel was really not employed in the vocation for which he had been trained. Due to the putting off of men at the Milson aerodrome there were greater demands being made now on the city relief depot and more applications were being made to the City Council for the working off of light and rates accounts. The expenditure of £I6OO in the year by the society, if maintained, would allow tho society to carry on operations at that level for ten or twelve years. The speaker concluded liy extending his thanks to the deputy-chairman, the executive and tile secretary (Mr J. Pcrniain). Seconding the motion, Mr Nash said that the end of the society’s life at that rate would see a great number of tho returned soldiers old men. There should bo no cheese-paring in payments of money whe.e funds wore required. It could almost lie said that the society was in a better position tium any other such body in New Zealand. Mr Jacobs, on behalf of the Palmerston North Returned Soldiers’ Association, extended the very sincere thanks of the association’s members for the meritorious manner in which claims had been met. Tile Returned Soldiers’ Association committee put in a great amount of time in administering lands granted to them. Had il not been for the co-operation between the two bodies there might easily have developed in Palmerston North tho same difficulties as those which had beset similar societies in some other centres. Mr Jacobs presented a report showing the manner in which a total of £2551), which had been handed to the Returned Soldiers’ Association for unemployment relief from various sources, had been expended. The report was received, the chairman commenting favourably on it. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The following office;s were appointed: President, the Mayor (Mr A. E. Alansfoi d); deputy-chairman, Mr B. J. Jacobs; executive, Messrs J. H. Stevens, D. Collis, AV. O. llutherfurd, J. A. Nash, T. R. Hodder, J. AV. Rutherfurd, H. N. Cooke, B. J. Jacobs, J. Linklater, O. Monrad, N. Blackmore, T. E. French, A.
