COUNTY’S NEEDS

DEPUTATION TO MINISTER. NO. 60 HIGHWAY. At to-day's meting of the Kairanga County Council, the chairman (Cr D. Collisf reported on the recent interview at Wellington which he and other members of the council had with the Minister of Public Works (Hon K. Semple) regarding various matters of interest to the county, particularly No. 60 highway (Palmerston North-Shan-non via Linton). , , The Minister, said Cr Collis, had not objected to the Makerua Imms road being declared a State highway, but the deputation had pointed out the necessity of No- bO highway being treated similaily. It° had been said that . the Makerua Plains route would not provide an all-weather route, the chairman stated, because of its liability to flooding. The Minister had favourably considered the request, but no decisionhad so far come to hand. A conference had been held with the Mam Highways Board representatives in Palmerston North in regard to constructing the first four miles of No. 60 highway from the 1 itzlierbert bridge southwards. The department hoped to find employment for some of the workers who had finished work at the Milson aerodrome. It had offered a £3 for .£1 subsidy for the proposed work on this highway. I lie council dpsived a £5 to £1 subsidy, as was received by other counties. The matter rested there at the present time. The chairman was hopeful of good results being obtained. Other members also reported on the matter, and it was decided to continue to press for the requirements stated.
