CALF CLUBS

REPORT ON ACTIVITIES. EDUCATIONAL BENEFITS. The report on the activities of the Boys’ and Girls’ Calf Club movement in ihe Manawatu-Oroua district states : Thirty-two schools took part in these competitions during the past season, and a total of 211 animals were presented for the judges’ inspections. A most pleasing feature of the work was the number of senior animals—yearlings, two-year-olds, etc—that was brought along to the various schools. It is felt that great educational benefits are secured when pupils are able to see the progress made by the animals from year to year. It is hoped that even a greater number of senior animals will he seen this year.

The championship classes were held on December 6 at the Feilding High School, in conjunction with the Young Farmers’ Club Show. The judges were Messrs R. Y. Brown and R. VC. Evans, of Levin. To these gentlemen, who gave their time and the benefit of their experience so freely, the thanks of all concerned in the movement are extended.

Sixty-seven animals, from all parts of the district, were presented. The total was made up as follows: —Calves 4G. yearlings 15, older animals 6. It is pleasing to record the splendid support given the movement, and it is very satisfying to those connected with the clubs to see the older animals present in such numbers. It may l>e mentioned that animals from the extremes of the district —Linton. Orangipongo and Otamakapua —-were presented. It speaks well for the future of the movement that residents are interested to such an extent to provide transport over such distances. The principal awards were as follow :

Calves. —Type. June Lancaster's Primrose. Kopane: care in rearing, John McLeod’s Beauty, Taomii. Yearlings.-—Type, Joyce Prentice, Kopanc. Two-year-old.—Type, George Hare’s Nattie, Cheltenham.

The cup presemed by the New Zealand Milking Shorthorn Association for Shorthorn calves judged on type was won by Maurice Hill’s Ruby, Kopane.

The schools’ cup, most points at the championship.—Kopane School. There was a good attendance of the general public, who showed considerable interest in the judging. The prize-giving, a.t which the president, Mr J. H. Mason, presided, was held in the assembly hall at the Feilding Agricultural High School, the recipients being handed their rewards by ill- L. J. Wild, principal of theschool. It would not be fitting to conclude this review without a word of thanks to all those who assisted to make the year’s work a success. Supervisors, parents, teachers and children a-re included in this and a special word is due to our judges who, often at inconvenience to themselves, assisted us.
