AGRICULTURAL CLUBS

MANAWATU-OROUA DIVISION

ROOT CROP COMPETITION

The results of judging in the Mana-watu-Oroua Division of the Boys and Girls’ Agricultural Clubs have been issued by the judges, Messrs E. H. Lange and A. j. Colder, for the Wanganui Education Board. In their report on tho entries the judges state: Activities.—The ' mangel plot competitions were continued as formerly, this year’s plots being the sixteenth of the series in this district. Competitor's, on this occasion, were required to grow two varieties of mangels in their plots, the Prizewinner Yellow Globe being a compulsory root in all cases. In addition to the compulsory variety, plots of Long Red. Intermediate Red. Jersey Queen, Golden Tankard and Yellow Intermediate mangels were seen.

It is interesting to record that the Yellow Globs once again held its own in the crop results. Owing to the exceptionally wet spell in January and February, the number of plots brought to a successful conclusion was the lowest for many years. Though nearly 200 entries were received, only 70 plots were presented for the judges’ inspection. In viewing these results it should be remembered that many of the competitors are absent on holiday during the Christmas vacation, and that their plots are cleaned up early in February, after the weed growth of the holidays. The weather condition's. this year, did not allow of the working of the plots during February. and consequently weed growth took charge, and the plots were abandoned as hopeless. In some eases, too. flood waters were responsible for the ruin of the crops, lire average weight per acre of the 70 plots judged was much lower than in previous years.

Whereas in 1935, 16 plots yielded over 100 tons per acre, this year there was only one.

Show Entries.- —The special classes at the Palmerston North Winter Show were well supported by the competitors. Hoots of hitch ouality appeared on the stand, and it is evident that the pupils recognised the correct type of root. Records.—The work produced was well up to standard. A survey indicated that the educational value of the studies made is considerable. General. —The time seems ripe for a change in the nature of this work. It is not suggested that the root crop competitions should he dispensed with, but it is felt that, if the pupils could he given a choice of crops, greater interest would he manifested in the competitions, and more entries would he forthcoming. It is. therefore, recommended that for the coming year, schools bo given the choice of either mangel plots or general plots; such general plots to he of the same area as mangel plots ; but to contain six compulsory rows of roots —mangels, carrots, swedes, parsnips, etc. —The competitors to he allowed to grow three additional rows of any crops they might select. It might he mentioned that this competition has been success-' ful in another part of the district. Thanks.—Wo wish to place on record our appreciation of the support of the teachers, whose untiring efforts have greatly stimulated the work. Our thanks are also due to the local supervisors, and to all those gentlemen who assisted with transport, finance etc., in the school districts. Their kindly assistance is greatly appreciated.
