HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT

TALLOW AND HEMP

The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram dated July 11, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London:— Tallow.—Good demand at auction ; 390 casks offered, 186 sold. Mixed description, 9d dearer; better grades not wanted. Present spot quotations are: Mutton: Fine, 30s to 31s; fair to good, 20s to 265; dark to dull, 18s Cd to 19s 6d. Beef: Sweet and/or mixed, 24s to 265; fair to good, 20s to 235; dark to dull 18s 6d to 19s 3d. Mixed: Fair to good, 20s to 235; (lark to dull, 18s 6d to 19s 3d. Gut, etc., 17s to 19s. Hemp.—Manila market quiet and easier. Sellers quote K grade lor August-Oqtober shipment, 6s. Stocks in London on July 1, 14.223 bales, against 14,116 same time last year. Sisal market - easier on adverse American crop report. Angust-Octo-ber shipments sold £26 7s 6d. New Zealand market quiet; small business has been done. August-September shipment, common, £l7 15s; rejected, £l6 15s. Stocks in London at July 1, 77 tons, fi tons same time last year. FRUIT TRADE. Fruit. —Apples, Port Hobart. Port Gisborne discharged in good condition. Market still difficult. London prices: Desert Gold, Giengyle Red. Jonathan, Dunn’s Favourite, Lord Wolselev and Tasma, 6s to 7s; Rome Beauty, Pioneer, Premier, Ballarat and Statesman. 6s to 8s; Stunner and Newtown Pippin, 6s to 7s Gd ; itokewood. 8s to 9s; Dougherty, 8s to 11s; Granny Smith. 8s to I2s. Excepting Rokewood, Dougherty, and Granny Smith, northern prices are generally Is higher than London. Pears.—Balance of Rangitane shipment in co.d store: Winter Neks f2s lo 15s; Josephine, 14s 6d; Beurre Easter, Glou Morcenu, 9s to ]2s; Elizabeth Cole, P. Barry, 10s 6d ; Keiffer, 8s to 10s.
