meeting of the council. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The monthly meeting of the Horowlienua County Council was held at Levin on Saturday. Those present were Crs. G. A. Monk (chairman), L. H. Best, A. J. Gimblett, D. K. Guy, A. AJ. Colquhoun, J. R. Whyte, F. J. Ryder, H. G. Bryant, and C. P. Jensen. The report of the engineer (Air J. T. Hi. Brewster), which was adopted, stated, inter aliaMain highways: Construction work cm No. 06 main highway ceased at noon on June 27. General maintenance has been attended to on Nos. 1 and 60 mam highways. Prcpartions are in hand Kir the commencement of construction work on No. 374. main highway, iwo and a-lia.ll chains of drain on ino. 473 main highway have been moved from the edge of tlie metal to a point ten feet away. Surveys have been carried out ou the section of No. 374 and part of tlie section of No 372 main highways that it is proposed to seal this year. Tokomaru riding: Drains have been cleaned in Stout Street. The grader lias been over various district roads. On portion ol Ashlea-Temukaiiui Road the graJer blade collided with a number of stumps which were near the road surface. These were removed. Whirokino riding: Maintenance metal lias been put on Queen Street, Arapaepae, Kimberley, and Oliau West Roads. The girders that were ordered last December for the bridge on Muhunoa AYest Road have now been delivered at the bridge site. A start will be made with the construction of the bridge at an early date. The ranger reports having dealt with 4!) head ol wandering stock.—The report was received.

CORRESPON DEN CE. The Minister of Internal Affairs wrote drawing attention to Arbor Day falling on August 5 and appealed for the active co-operation of local bodies. —Received. 'Tlie AYellington Prisoners’ Aid Society wrote expressing thanks for a donation of £2 2s.—Received. The iflayor of AYellington (Mr T. C. A. Hi slop.) advised that a meeting would be held cn August 3 to select four dek/ttes to attend a Dominion conference in regard to the centennial celebrations. —ft was decided that the Mayor of Levin (Air P. W. Goldsmith) lie asked to represent the council when fie attends on behalf of the Levin Borough Council, the County Council to bear a portion of the cost.

The Levin Borough Council advised that the contribution from tlie County Council for tlie services of the health inspector bad been raised to £123 a year Horn £99. llis salary had been 830 a year below that offered inspectors commencing duty with the Health Department, and lie had been £l4 out of pocket on travelling expenses each year over the past five years. An addition of £3O a year had accordingly been made to the inspector’s salary. Tlie Shannon Borough forwarded thanks for a grant of £5 to-, ward the cost of restoring the mortuary chapel. —Received. The Makerua Drainage Board advised that, in view of the council s making a contribution toward tho cost of the Kara Stream floodgate (between Kingston Road corner and Shannon), tho council was absolved from any future maintenance expenditure. —Received.
