AYHAKARONGO FUNCTION

The fourth birthday of the AVliakarongo Women’s Institute was celebrated with a function in the Hall which was packed. Possibly this was the most successful function of its kind hold in the hall, and finances should benefit considerably as a result. Mrs Johansen, president of the institute, welcomed the assembly and outlined the activities for the past year. Associated with the president on the stage were Afesdames T. Christensen (treasurer) and S. Oxcnham (acting-secretary). These three ladies were the recipients of posies, presented by Lola Smith, and the work of .Mesdames J. Morns, F. Eagle, and F. Fountain. Proceedings opened with the ‘‘Ode to Friendship,” sung by all, Aliss S. Speedy being pianist, after which an orchestral number was given by Air A. Feeney and his associates. Aliss Betty Havill, in appropriate cockney costume, sang “On a Sunday Afternoon,” her item calling for an encore. A plavette was produced by Aliss Van tier, the list of characters being: Mother, Mrs Oxenham; father, Mr P. Vautier; grandma, Aliss T. N'ewcume; Emmie, Aliss Connie Vautier; Alfic-, Air Ernie Newcombe. The trials of the" Bngginses on their day out were closely followed by tho audience who were not slow in catching the humorous points of the story. Always a popular performer. Air Potter by Mr Feeney) was most mausing. He responded to a hearty encore. “When Irish Eyes Arc Smiling” was sung by Miss Peggy Havill, the clever little singer being dressed appropriately. Her item was encored. A small dancer, Miss P. Pollow, executing a skipping dance and . then a tap dance, receiving well-mei Ced applause.. Mis Maniou sang “J!cd Sails in the Sunset” and “Prairie Alooii.” Air Payne with iiis daughter Elva as associate, thoroughly mystified those present with Ins exhibitions of mind reading and conjuring. Airs Havill sang “Sweet .Mystery of Life” and an encore number. She was followed by Miss J. AlcKenzie in tap dances. The finale to an excellent programme was anothoi piayeite. which went with a swing from start to finish. The acting was excellent and the item a most amusing one. TTio.se in the cast were: Amelia, Mr J. Morris; Henry. Air Alan Caw ford; Victor Ernie Newcombe; Eliza, Aliss T. Newcombe; Ben, AI. Ivan Vautier; grandpa., Afr J. Alorris. Aliss Vautier was producer. After supper the president called on the oldest member (Airs Culpan) and the youngest (Aliss M. Hodgson) to light and blow out the four candles on the cake. The two-tiered cake was of cream and gold, the top layer having the institute badge in correct colouring. This was the work of Aliss Vantier, while the cake was made bv Airs Waugh. Thanks were accorded these ladies and to Mr Boniface for the generous loan of the stand and pillar for the cake. Air F. Eagle later officiated as AI.C. for a jolly dance, music being supplied by a professional orchestra. Noverty prizes were won bv the following:—Lucky Gay Gordons, Aliss E. Hansen and Airs Cook; Monte Carlo, Mrs Murphy and Mr Hamlin. A popular extra on a piano-accordeon accompanied by a. v.iolin was given bv Messrs Bennett and Mitchell. Two competitions resulted: Cake, Air F. Smith; order, Air N. Speedy. Among those preseut were Alesdames Oxenliam. blue and silver; Johansen, dusky pink; Christensen; Morris, blue and silver; Fountain, floral; Lawrence, blue lace; Cook, black satin and lace; Coutts, black and floral; James, wine; Eagle, floral georgette; Lancaster, floral crepe; Byers, black lace; Culpan, black; Misses M.
