POWER CHANGES

REDUCTIONS MADE. MANAWATU-OItOUA BOARD. Decisions to effect changes in tariff charges which, it was explained, were estimated to save consumers £3OOO a year, were made at the monthly meeting of the Manawatu-Orpua Power Board yesterday. Tlie changes deal with domestic and commercial lighting. The following explanation of tho changes was made by tlie engineer (Mr AV. A. Waters): —“Formerly all electricity used in the homes has been metered separately at two pices and 7d per unit nett was charged for all lighting, but this has now been re-1 duced to 6d nor unit nett, and at the same time the separate metering of uses other than lighting lias been eliminated, in accordance with modern practice. This is to meet the rapidly growing tendency to use radio portable lamps, refrigerators and so _ on, and the supply to all homes will lie ou a sliding scale, the first 15 units being charged at 6d per unit, th 6 next 25 units at 2d per unit, the iiex.t 60 units at l)d and the balance at lid per unit. By this method the consumers can use the light freely, for the more they use tlie cheaper per unit becomes the price. Other charges in the commercial lighting have also been reduced, while the consumers who have installed condensers with all their electric motors will receive an extra discount of 5 per cent.” The changes were made on the recommendation of tho finance committee. In moving the adoption of the recommendation, tho chairman (Air C. G. C. Dermer) said that there was lio doubt that there would he slight anomalies that would have to be corrected later. However, the changes would mean a very great improvement on the former tariff and would also encourage greater consumption. Air J. A. Nash seconded the motion, saying that lie thought the proposal ail excellent one. The motion was passed and it was decided that the new tariff come into operation after the meters had been read on the next occasion.
