KAIRANGA COUNTY

meeting of council. The monthly meeting ot the Kair.'inga County Council was held to-day, the chairman (Cr. D. Collis) presiding over the following members: Crs. F. J. Russell, N. P. Nielsen, W. R. Hopcroft, Jos. Batchelar, T. D. Lynch, At. W. Voss, J. Smith and W. G. Shannon. The engineer (Mr L. C. Pickering), in his monthly report, stated: — ’“Taonui riding.—The weather, in the main, has been exceptionally good for this time of the year. A rather serious flood, caused by rains in Hawke’s Bay. occurred on June 17, inundating the proposed State highway, Foxton Line, and Hamilton s Line. It was one ot the fastest rising floods known in recent years, rising to fifteen feet during the night. Little damage other than the erosion of metal from roads occurred. AVe have been requested to remove all trees on land taken for .widening purposes fronting Long Melford Road, and Returned Soldiers’ Association men have been engaged in this work. Many trees are of large dimensions and care lias to be taken in their falling. All suitable timber has been cut up into posts and strainers, and the other into firewood for future tarring operations. Men : have beer, screening metal on the Hunt Club’s beach, carting metal to dumps and patching as required. Several drains giving direct road drainage have been cleaned out on Foxton Line, Kairangn-Bunnythorpe Road and Long-burn-Rongotea Road. The motor grader has been grading and cutting off corrugations. “Alangaone riding.—The portable crusher has been crushing boulders at James’s Line pit in preparation for the strengthening of Railway Road. A meeting of the Highways District Council was held during the month and all new works applied for were j granted. The stopbr.nl! erected on Mr j Hill’s property has now been satisfactorily completed; the batter facing Mangaone Stream lias been sodded and the whole of the work fenced, off from stock. The fresh in the Mangaone Stream brought down a supply of good metal and this has been carted to dumps or spread direct on roads as required. The re-alignment of the formation of Milson’s Line has been proceeded with, necessitating the lengthening or renewal of several culverts before fillings could be completed for consolidation. Two sets of concrete pipes have been carted to Setter s Line and Railway. Road to replace old wooden box culverts, and will be put ill next week. The truck lias been patching as required and carting crushed nidtal to Railway Road. Both the motor grader and horse grader have been called into operation in an endeavour to cope with the corrugation nuisance. Drains have been cleaned out and deepened on Richardson’s Line, Setter’s Line and James’s Line. “Fitzhcrbert riding.—The recently opened pit on No. 4 Line has now worked out and our supply of pit metal is nearly exhausted. Negotiations for the purchase of nearby land will have to be further considered. All dips on No. 60 highway have been blinded with pit metal and this has given every satisfaction, both as regards binding quality and running surface. Several small‘slips have occurred on Tiritca Rond. No. 4 Line, Old West Road and Pnhiatua Road, nil of which have been cleared. The flood on June 17 caused a scour on State’s Road, necessitating the building of a breastwork to impede the flow of water over the road at this point. Further scouring of Lanksliear s Creek, on Fitzlierliert East Road, has taken place, and although an application for a grant towards protecting this bridge has been made to the Public Works Department, no reply has been received. This further scour has called for immediate action and several groynes have been put in to help the position until such time as we hear from the Public "Works Department regarding subsidising the work. The Returned Soldiers’ Association scheme men have completed the cleaning of the following drains, which -ive direct benefit to the road:— Robertson’s, Brill’s, Peterson’s, Andersen’s. Coker’s, and Fitzlierbert East Road, in all approximately 204 chains. Several by-roads have been cut out with the grader and sods forked off, thus giving an additional width of usable road. The trucks and graders have been continually busy patching and maintaining good running sursurfaces.” The engineer’s report, was adopted.
