EXTRACTS FROM JULY 14, 1906.
Mr Joseph Chambcrlan, who had justcompleted his “three score years and ten.” had been thrice married, thrice Mayor of Birmingham, and had hold office under three Prime Ministers. He had resigned from Ministerial office about three years picviousl.v. A two-storeyed brick budding was to be elected on the site of the Silver Grid restaurant in Palmerston North, which had been destroyed by file. The Racing Conference had granted permission for a three days’ meeting to bo hold by the Manawatu Racing Club. There were 72 mounted rifle corps in the. Colony, having a strength of 359 officers and 3334 other ranks. Maoris in the Waikato area were in dire straits because of the failure of the potato crop. In some eases the Government had to give assistance to save them from starvation. Messrs Reeves, Rhodes, and Wilding had arranged with the Marylobone Cricket Club for an amateur team to visit New Zealand, stated a message from London. The team were to arrive in December.
