JAPANESE CASE.

FOR RECIPROCAL TRADE. DOMINION’S OPPORTUNITY. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, July 13. The fact that Australia has raised a tariff wall against Japan is regarded by Mr T. Ogata, who arrived by the Wanganella, as an excellent opportunity for New Zealand to increase her exports of wool, casein, and tallow to Japan. He also naively added that Japan, in return, would look for an increased share of the Dominion market. Mr Ogata said the drastic reform of the Australian tariff had quite upset the trade equilibrium between the two countries, and Japan had to find other markets. At the present time'Japan was very busy, with little unemployment.

Mr Ogata insisted that his country was friendly and peace-loving. He disclaimed any territorial ambition. Japan wanted a market for her products, and was willing to buy what she could, not produce; there had to he two-way trade, with reciprocity on both sides.
