PARKING BICYCLES.

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —In your issue of July 11 there appeared a report before the meeting of the Manawatu Automobile Association commenting on the above subject. It overlooked the \fact that for the greater part of the day there are not nearly' sufficient facilities provided for cyclists in the way of stands. It would be interesting to know if motorists are not satisfied with the use of the street for parking, without blocking the narrow sidewalk and kerb also with the buffers of ears extending past the kerb and blocking people who arc walking. I have had to pull people hack to save them from getting bit on the legs by cars nosing in while their backs were turned. I notice there was no report before the meeting of cycles that have been damaged by motorists and in some cases new wheels have had to be replaced at the cyclists’ expense. Why does not our City Council clear all care off the shopping side of Broadway oil Saturday nights? As they are parked there after business premises are closed, the pretext of shopping cannot cover that fact. The council supplies free parking and other places m side streets. Why are they not used? If our City Council assume the right of granting free parking to motorists as mentioned they (the council) have also a duty to cyclists and pedestrians, and duties come before rights. Other councils have prohibited cars from parking in the business area with good results all round. I understand there is only about 9 per cent, of motorists who do any shopping here on Saturday night.—l am, etc.,
