GUARANTEED PRICES

FEELING IN TARANAKI. INFORMATION WANTED. Per Press Association. HAWERA, July 2. The South Taranaki Farmers’ Union considers the time lias arrived when the Government should remove the air of secrecy from the conditions governing farm labour and that they should be made known as 6oon as possible. Speaking at an executive meeting today, Mr H. E. Blyde said the farm labour proposals were tied to the guaranteed price plan, and once the Government's intentions regarding labour were known the guarnteed price would also be known. He thought the farmer should know where he stood. “It has been stated that the farmers are being treated like a lot of kids, and no other body in New Zealand would stand for it,” said Air W. A. Sheat, the president. “You are expected to arrange your business for a year without knowing what your income is to be.” Air Sheat said it had been suggested that the guaranteed price was being kept secret in order to prevent speculation, but he considered that there was speculation going on, and had been for weeks past. If the guaranteed price had been known months ago, as it should have been, there would have been no fear of speculation. Last week six Taranaki herds were sold for the reason that people were changing over to sheep. This was due to the Government’s policy of secrecy. “We are past the middle of the year, and don’t know what we are to face; it is quite time we did,” concluded Air Sheat.
