LICENSE CANCELLED.

MAGISTRATE’S WARNING. Before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, Francis James Foster, aged 48, farmer, was charged with being intoxicated while in charge of a motor-ar on the Long-burn-Foxton Road on June 25. A plea of guilty was entered. Senior-Sergeant Moriarty stated that defendant was driving home at 5.40 p.m. on Thursday when, just past Longburn, be was steering in an erratic manner. His car collided with another car coming from Wellington, though the latter had gone off the bitumen on its correct side. A doctor had pronounced him unfit to drive, had admitted having five whiskies. Mr It. L. Laurenson, who appeared for defendant, stated that the latter had been driving slightly on his wrong side of the road, and had struck a right-hand wheel of the other car. His wife and another farmer, who were passengers, considered him quite capable of driving. He had had three whiskies in the morning and two in tiie afternoon. Defendant had been driving since 1920 without an accident. The use of his car was essential to him in his work. The Magistrate said that was not going to help defendant, whose license would be suspended for twelve months. No man found guilty of being drunk in charge of a car would be permitted to retain bis license. Defendant was also fined £ls, with £1 11s costs, being allowed one month in which to pay. The Magistrate warned defendant that if he drove his car it would cost him £lO a time.
