DAIRY PRODUCTION

DROP IN THE SOUTH. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, June 26. “Rather alarming” was the opinion expressed by Mr John Smith, president, at the annual meeting of the South Island Dairy Association concerning the big drop in dairy production in the South Island in the last three years. “The export figures show that' the decline amounts to 23 per cent,” he said. “Weather conditions were not favourable during the last two sea sons and the low price for butterfat caused many producers to change over to other more remunerative branches of farming.” He was disappointed to note an apparent decline in the quality of cheese made in Otago and Southland in the last four years. The gradings - showed that the percentage of finest grade in Otago had dropped back from 66 per cent, in 1931-32 to 35 per cent, last year, and in Southland from 61 per cent, to 30 per cent. He bad no satisfactory explanation to .offer for that.
