HEREFORD CATTLE

BREEDERS’ ASSOCIATION

The annual meeting of the New Zealand Hereford Cattle Breeders’ Association was held yesterday, Mr I<\ E. Humphreys presiding. The report and balance-sheet were read and adopted. The report stated : “The financial position as disclosed by the balance-sheet is very satisfactory, an excess of income over expenditure of £34 2s 4d resulting, which brings the accumulated fund to £657 19s sd. The total income received from fees and other sources amounted to £4O 15s lid more than the previous year, while the expenditure was silglitly increased. The grant to the Royal Agricultural Society was made by the council, and donations amounting to £2O were made to various A. and Jr. Associations in addition. The council decided to pursue a more vigorous* policy of advertising. Members were circularised advising them ot the contemplated step, and at the same time were asked to support the association by inserting their names in the association’s advertisement at a tee ot 26s per annum. Some twelve members availed themselves of this opportunity and these, with the addition or those who already advertised under this scheme, make a total number of advertisers of 22. The contributions from these members very materially assist the association. The sale of bulls held last October by the associated auctioneers was rather disapponting from a breeders’ point ot view; very few sales were made and the prices offered were low. It must be remembered, however, _ tli.'it in any initial venture, immediate success is not assured, and perhaps better results will eventuate if the fixture is persisted in and not allowed to lapse. A comparison of the figures tor volumes 37 and 38 shows that the Hereford is more than holding its own. Ihe total entries'in the Herd Book were 1006 and 1142 respectively. Transfer certificates for 114 cows and oo buns were issued during the year. Import certificates were issued for six bulls, this being an increase of three over the previous year. Importations during the year, both horned and polled, amounted to 28, the figures for each section being 2 horned and 40 polled. From reports received some excellent cattle have come into the Dominion and no doubt the standard ot the breed will be kept up, it not improved upon.” . , The president, in moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, said that the position was epute a satisfactory one. It was good to be able to record a further advance in the membership. r , , N ■ Mr J. M. James (Masterton), in seconding the motion, complimented the association on the natuie 0 . balance-sheet. It had been making headway slowly and st ? £ , this report revealed that interest was not slacking off. The policy of the association m recent times had been to increase its advertising, and ne was sure that this had been responsible in no small measure to its increased activity During the slump of recent years he knew that inteiest among the farmers had waned considerably but now that conditions were looking up and the association was pushing forward its interests support was forthcoming again. . One °t tne reasons for this renewed interest, was the increased competition la forthcoming from Australia and the Argentine. It was quality in beef that needed to-day and m th. connec tion it was accepted that the beast was the better. In commenting on the embargo on stock linpoited from England, Mr James said that though he iid not want to raise question at that stage, he knew that farmers and breeders were bem a ha flicanoed in not getting just wuaL they wanted by direct importation from the Mother Country. He was sure that if the animals were brought direct the care that was taken atHome with regard to the prevention ot toot and mouth disease would ensure the quality of the beast was satistac to ln referring to the breeds of cattle, Mr James said that in Australia and the Argentine they were going l polled animals, a type advocated by tho chairman (Mr Humphreys), and he was sure that in years to come (heie would be very few horned Hereford lef j\lr P M- Cranston (Fordell) endorsed Mr James’s remarks. In■«<'ard to the remarks. made regarding poll cattle, he contended that were not up to the standard ot the homed cattle at the Royal »ho\ Sydney which he attended. The following officers were elected: President, Mr Humphreys; hoi. treasurer, Mr E. E. Short; hou. auditor, Mr K. S. Glendmmng. As no nominations had been received or the four vacancies on tne council the retiring councillors (Messrs E. Jefferson, ■ty. K. Morton, D- lynan and W. Jj* White) were declared re-elected. In thanking the members tor again placing him at their head, Mr Humphreys stated that he was always ready to render any service to the associa-

tIO A letter was received from Mr 6F Moore, of Kai lwi, with regaid to the clause in the rules govenunt the entering of cattle in the Herd Book which States that once a cow is bml with a double standard 1 oiled Hereford it must remain tor ever in the Polled Hereford division, there was no such restriction m Australia. Mr James contended that there should not be any difference. 11 only question was how the editin D committee would find it. The chairman said that it would be likely to create a muddle and m a tew years’ time they would not know wlier they were with the beasts. Other speakers, however, contended that the rules should not be altered and the association should proceed the opinion of the meeting the chairman moved “that the paragraph on the conditions of entry t>~ deleted.” The motion was lost. It was decided to write to Mr Moore pointing out the reasons lor the association’s refusal to accede to his request.
