SINGAPORE BASE.

MORE LAND BOUGHT. It is learned in an authoritative quarter, that the Admiralty intends stil further to strengthen and extend tiie Singapore Base. To this end it has purchased 400 additional acres of land on which, it is understood, barracks and parade grounds for a strong force of marines will be prepared. Work oil the base, which is now regarded as potentially the most powerful British citadel in the world, was completed, as far as the principal contract was concerned, in March this year, by the firm of Sir John Jackson, Ltd. Admiralty engineers are completing subsidiary works. The plan for converting this considerable area of jungle into a naval base was hold up in 3 930, and later, bv the imperial Conference. In all, however, about £9,000,000 has been spent. There is a huge floating dock, a great fortress on the island of Palau Tckong, an air base manned by the R.A.F., and a garrison of regular troops and volunteer forces.
