MAGISTRATE’S COURT

BREACHES OF BY-LAWS. Mr J. L. Stout, S.M.. presided over the sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at Palmerston North to-day. For cycling at night without lights, A. Holland (Newbury). H. Atkins and L J. Cockerv were fined 10s, with 3s costs in the case of the first named, and 10s costs in the two others.

Mr L. G. H. Sinclair entered plea-s of guilty on behalf of W. Helsby. to charges against the latter of using a motor car without ia/change of ownership being registered, and of failure to possess a driver’s license. Counsel said that defendant had paid the vendor the transfer fee, but the change had not been notified. Fines of 10s, and 5s respectively, with 10s costs, were inflicted in respect of each charge. N. L. Mickleson, of Kumeroa, was fined £2, with 10s costs, for crossing the railway line in a motor vehicle at the Post Office crossing when an engine was approaching within half a mile. Charged with driving a car in Main Street at a speed which, having regard to all the circumstances, might have been dangerous to the public, G. Murchison was fined £3, with 10s costs. For operating a motor vehicle at night without a tail-light. J. P. Rossiter was fined 10s, with 10s costs. J. Morgan was fined 10s. with 13s costs, on a. charge of leaving a car parked for more than five minutes parallel to the kerb, and more than three feet away from it, in RanEitikei Street. It was stated that defendant had blocked the -egress of a car and kept a commercial traveller waiting for 20 minutes. BUILDING BREACH.

A plea of guilty was entered by Mr A. M. Ongley on behalf of J. Gillies, of Andrew Young Street, to a charge against the latter of commencing the erection of a sleeping-porch without a building permit. Mr H. R. Cooper, apeparing for the City Council, said ■a permit had been applied for blit refused and defendant had proceeded with the work. Mr Ongley said the addition had been built ip wood and iron on top of a washhouse, it being essential that a sleeping porch should be provided for defendant’s wife, who had j Hat returned from a hospital. Defendant was fined £2, with 10s costs.

LICENSING ACT. Neil Cruden was charged that, being a person other than the licensee of the Family Hotel, he did sell liquor after hours. Senior-Sergeant Moriarty stated that defendant had l>een in charge of the hotel during the absence of the licensee on holiday. Three, young men had been involved in a fatal accident at Awahuri and inquiries revealed that they had been supplied with liquor by defendant. Mr J. M. Gordon, who appeared for defendant, said the three men had come 'in asking for a drink and he had supplied them to get rid of them. But for his frank admissions to the police, the hitter might have had difficulty in bringing a prosecution. A penalty of £5, with 3s costs, was imposed on defendant. OTHER CASES. Basil Tui Bishop, a labourer aged 23, was charged that on May 18, at Feilding, he did forge a cheque drawn on the Bank of Australasia for £7, and purporting to be signed by W. H Hynes. On the application of Detective Power, who stated that inquiries were still being made, accused was remanded to appear again on Friday next. Conrad Bartley Leeks pleaded guilty to a charge of obtaining sustenance to the extent of £6 2s by misleading an official engaged in tho administration of the Unemployment Act. Defendant was fined this amount, with 19s costs, default being fixed at one month’s hard labour, the warrant to be suspended as long as £1 a month is paid. Stated to be £8 Is 6d in arrears with payments under a maintenance order, Harry Menefy was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, his release to be conditional on tho payment of arrears.
