MAORI CONTRIBUTION TO CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS.—Tangi-te-Kiwi, the Man Bird, which was the property of the late King Mahuta, of Huntly. This is one of the seven canoes which will be reconstructed by Princess Te Puea Herangi as the Waikato's contribution to the 1940 centenary celebrations. It has an interesting history. This is the canoe in which Te Rata Mahuta, the Maori King who has recently died, took that famous champion of the Maoris in the Kingite Wars, Sir John Gorst, from Ngaruawahia to Waahi when he was last in New Zealand.
