WHAKARONGO INSTITUTE.
The monthly meeting of the Whakarongo Women’s Institute was held in the hall oi» Wednesday afternoon, Mrs Johansen presiding. The roll-call was “The best bargain I ever made.” Apologies for absence were received from 4 number of ladies who were unable to attend because of the rain. One new member, Mrs Alpin, was welcomed. Visitors welcomed were Mrs Gibbs, Mrs Ohowen and Mrs Gilshnan. Final arrangements were discussed in connection with the stall to bo held at the Manawatu Show next week. A demonstration on smocking was given by Mrs Chowcn, of Aokautcre, and many useful hints were learned thereby. She was accorded a vote of for her interesting talk. Miss Thelma Nowcombe delighted members with an clocuionary item which was well rendered. An interesting competition, in which members had to name diifcrent shops in a section of the Square in Palmerston North, was won by Airs Pyc, with Mrs F. Smith Mrs Oxenham and "Mrs Gibbs equal for second place and Mrs Burr and Mrs Alpin equal for third place in the married ladies’ division. In the single ladies’ section, Miss C. W. Vauticr was first. Miss M. Vautier second, and Miss R. Park third. For the beet crotched d’oyley in the senior section, Mrs Mever was first, Mrs Johansen second, and Mrs Pyc third. For the best embroidered d’oyley in the junior section, Miss Connio Vautier was first, Mi>s M. Vautier second and Mies R. Park and Miss C. W. Vautier, equal, third. Miss M. Lancaster was the winner of the potato-growing competition. The competition for next month is for the best smocked frock. The programme was left in the hands of the junior members. The hosterficis will be Misses M. and S. Speedy, M. Jonson, O. Uhrbom, C L. Vautier, M Harrofield, M. Lancaster, and M. McCool. A vote of thanks was accorded those who had assisted in making the afternoon the success it wa6.
