REPORT ON ROADS. At the meeting of the Manawatu County Council, this week, the icport of the engineer (Mr 11. V. Bond) was j adopted as follows: Alain highways.—Further mainten- ( anee work has been undertaken on the Wliirokino Road and it is now nearing a more reasonable state of repair. Maintenance metal is being sptead on j the Foxton-Shnnnon highway. Some ] of the places on the Himatangi-San-son highway where the metal has worn i right through to the sand have been ] patched with (tit metal. Maintenance ; metal has been spread where required. ] Drains have been cleaned on Sanson- , Bulls highway. One old culvert on tho ■ Tangimoana highway lias been re- i placed with concrete pipes and the road surface has been patched with metal. A coat of maintenance metal j has been spread on Feilding-Awahuri and Stewart’s Line highways. The Rongotea-Longburn highway is now receiving attention and metal*is being taken from the Oroua Rive • at Ko- - pane for this and the northern end of the Rangiotu-Rongotea highway. Surface metal has also been spread on the southern end of the latter road. County roads and bridges.—One small wooden bridge in Stewart Street, south of Foxton, which collapsed, has now been replaced in hardwood. Drains have been cleaned on No. 2 and No. 6 Lines. Contractors have commenced spreading metal on side roads in this . area. Downs Road has been patched . with metal. A track is being cut on Bainesse Road from the end of the metal to tho boundary of Air Cornfoot’s property. Aletal has been delivered tc# Rangiotu for the metalling of Mangawhatn, Puawai, and Raupo Roads. Further banking is being car-1 ried out on Couper’s Line and surface metal has been spread on a portion of Taikorea Road. Metal for the roads in the Rongotea and Kopane districts is now being taken from the Oroua River at Kopane. Arrangements have been made with a contt actor to drag the metal from the river- j bed on Air Beattie’s property and most! of the roads in this district will he completed without delay. Ivaimatarau Road has been patched with Rangitikei River metal. A portion of Tnipo Road and the Taipo-Awaliuri Road have received a coat of surface metal from the river at Awahuri. Other roads in this area will bo metalled from Kopane. Tho washout on Boues’s Road is now receiving attention. Some manuka scrub has been delivered to the site in readiness for the filling to he made. Surface metal is being spread on the Alt. Stewart-Halcombe and Rakehou Roads. A new concrete pipe culvert has been laid on Taylor’s Line. Drains and watertables have been cleaned on Cemetery, McDonnell’s, Fagan’s, and Kakariki roads. The cutting in the latter mentioned road leading to Alingaroa Flat- was badly washed out during the heavy rains. This has been put in passable order, but further work will have to be undertaken when lorries become available. General.—The demand for metal from the Rangitikei River crushing plant was very light during Alay and only 445 e.yds. were delivered. The staff, however, were engaged in the manufacture of reinforced concrete pipes -for the proposed work on Hima-tangi-Sanson highway. The tram track has been maintained and extra work has been put in hand on the Rongotea Siding-Himatangi section in readiness for the heavy metal traffic expected in the near future. The roadman’s cottage at Glen Oroua has had the roofing iron and water tanks renewed. Some weather boards were taken out and replaced and interior decorations were undertaken. Three building permits to the value of £7OO have been issued. The plans and specifications for the Taylor’s Line bridge have been approved and tenders are now being called. The workshop staff have been engaged in the repair of road • and tramway machinery. The total cost was £157 3s 7d, £7l' Os 2d being for labour and £B6 3s 5d for materials.
