(From Our Own Correspondent.) WAITUNA, Blay 16. I The Waituna West Women’s Institute ! celebrated their third birthday on Thursday afternoon in tho hall, in the form of a social afternoon. The proceedings wore opened with the singing of the ode. A cordial welcome was extended to visitors, there being quite a number of other institutes present. The secretary read a report of flic council meeting of the Northern Wellington Federation which was held in j Palmerston North. Mrs C'lmrehcr rendered ■ “The Sunshine of Your Smile,” and for an encore, “The Land of Long Ago.” An amusing word competition was won by Mrs > Peterson while another musical competi--1 tion went to Miss E. Shannon. Afternoon tea was served by tho institute members; , the beautiful cake was made by Blrs L. i Meads and decorated by Miss K. England; ' tho candles were lit by tho oldest member, Blrs A. E. Pearce, and they were blown out by the youngest member, Bliss Mary Halford, tho cake being cut by the president j (Mrs J. 11. Williamson). A vote of thanks j was passed to Blrs L. Meads for making ' the birthday cake, and to Bliss Jv- Eng- . land for icing it. The play-reading circle | presented a play, entitled “It's (Quicker to | Telephone.” The characters were taken by Mrs J. H. Williamson (Blrs Rapkin), Blrs Petersen (Mr Rapkin), BJiss Joyce Batchclar (Blr Bloxham), and Bliss K. England' (the maid), which was much enjoyed. The presenting of tho aggregate points prizes for the year’s work took up an important part, of the afternoon. They were won by Blrs Petersen and Blrs T. D. Stokes, who gained 22 points each. Trophies were presented to both members by the president. The winners of the competition for the best decorative howl were:—Blrs Petersen 1. Bliss Shannon 2, and Bliss Gitylec 3. BTrs BlcFarlanc from the Stanway Institute thanked the president for the kind invitation to attend the birthdaV and regretted there were only three members from Stanway able to he present, and also apologised for the absence of the president. Blr and BTrs Mends, of Tapuae, have returned from Wellington. Bliss Zella. Bleads, of Tapuae, was admitted to a private hospital in Feilding where she underwent an operation for appendicitis. She is piogrcssing as well as can be expected and t her friends wish her a speedy recovery. | While on holiday at Tckcmaru, Mrs T. D. ; Stokes was a visitor to tho Opiki ' Women’s Institute fourth birthday even-: ing. A football match was played between Waituna West and Apiti seniors, the scores being Waituna 19 points to 5. The junior team travelled to Apiti where they boat Apiti by 21 points to 6. The Waituna erihhage team travelled to Kiwitea where they drew with Kiwitea.
