BRITISH NAVY
EIGHT CAPITAL SHIPS. UNPRECEDENTED POSITION. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received lUa.y lb, i .-to p.m. LONDON, May 15. The Navy List unprecedentedly shows only eight capital ships in lull commission. Tuey are the Nelson, Rodney and Hood with the Home Fleet; Barham, Valiant, Queen Elizabeth and Renown in the Mediterranean, and the Repulse, which goes to the Mediterranean on June 8. The Daily Telegraph’s naval correspondent explains that the situation is partly due to modernising the old ships and partly to shortage of personnel due to special measures in the Mediterranean. The AVarspite, Malaya and Royal Oa.k are being refitted with the special aircraft equ.pment. Tour other battleships are laid up, presumably for lack of personnel. Destroyers have increased from 5-1 to 78 and other auxiliaries have been largely augmented.
