The appointment of Hon. E. R. Davis as honorary Consul for Japan at Auckland is gazetted. Mr H. Betts, of Okaiawa, died last night in his 100th year. Mr Betts was one of the early settlers in South Taranaki, and became an expert and successful farmer and horticulturist.
Mr W. C. Barry has been appointed Registrar under the Veterinary Surgeons Act, acording to an announcement in the Gazette last night. He is also appointed Registrar under the Stock Remedies Act. The death occurred yesterday of Mr ■William E. Williams, of Hokitika, aged 69, the best-known pharmaceutical chemist in Wesland. He was an expresident of the Wesland Racing Club and deputy chairman and director of the Hokitika Savings Bank. He leaves a son, Herbert, who is in Australia, and two brothers, Percy (Wellington) and Robert (Sydney).
A Rotorua Press Association message announces the death of Mr John Failona, aged 76, one of the oldest resi dents oi the Rotorua district. Mr Fallona was living at Te \Yairoa, on the shores of Lalte Taiawera, at the time of the eruption of Tarawera mountain when the Maori settlement at Te Wairoa was completely overwhelmed. He was associated with many pioneering activities in the early days.
