MAN A WAT U COMPETITIONS. The Manawatu Hockey Association’s competitions were continued yesterday at Hokowhitu and Massey College. On the former ground, Woodville defeated Broadway B, 5—2, and Broadway A beat Combined Services 4—o. At the college, the home side lost to Phoenix 5 goals to 2. SERVICES v. BROADWAY A.
From the commencement the play ; went in favour of Broadway, C. Ward, centre forward, stain"; a nice rim fur the goal. The defence held well, however, and no score. eventuated. Following this, the piny was undecided, first one team and then the otlier having the advantage, but the Broadway players were more on the attack than defence. The two outstanding attacking men for the victors were D. Hoare and C. Ward, who each secured 2 goals, the latter especially, in his capacity as leader of the forwards, playing an aggressive game. W. Sutton and K. Drinkwater were again called upon to defend their goal constantly and both gave good exhibitions. Shortly after half-time. Services had a splendid chance to score with almost an open goal, .but the shot went wide. For the remainder of the game the advantage was fairly evenly shared and it was apparent that both teams were verv fit. .Messrs J. K. Paton and D. , AVilton were the umpires. j WOODVILLE v. BROADWAY B. j Demonstrating that they were fit and i well trained, Woodville in their game with Broadway B kept on the attack the whole time, continually worrying the defence and keeping up with' the play. They seemed to have better combination than their opponents, who on several occasions sent out wild passes which were easily intercepted. ■ The visitors looked like having a runaway victory when they scored in the i first few minutes of play and nearly i added another point with a fast : ground shot almost immediately after- ' wards, but, rallying from this reprisal, f Broadway attacked up the centre and . were awarded a corner. The move j failed, however, and shortly afterwards j Woodville scored again. After the interval, the visitors made an early addition to their score, McNeil sending in a fast one from outside, and though riroadwav strove hard to even the scores a'little, Woodville held their advantage until the whistle sound.". Scores were secured for Broadway by C. Page and J. Quigan, and for the visitors by McNeil' '(4), and Beal. The umpires were Messrs M. Levy and W. Lundy. PHOENIX v. MASSEY COLLEGE Playing on their home ground, Massev College lost to Phoenix by 5 goals to' 2. The game was clean and fast, both teams displaying good eombina- | tion.
