ST. PATRICK’S v. KOWHAI. Playing in tlie mid-week Rugby competitions at the Showgrounds on Wednesday, Kowhai defeated St. Patrick’s by 8 points to 6 in a keenly contested, open game. The 'teams were: St. Patrick’s (green and white!.— L. Zalouni, R. Zaloum, Brinsden, Allen, Hazelwood, Strange, Hemasson, Grinrod, Lashlie, Hanlv, Leader, Ross, Andrew. Kinsella, Jennings. Kowhai kicked off, and the yellows immediately carried piav to the St. Patrick’s line, where a penalty relieved the pressure for the greens. Play ranged up and down the field, both ! ack lines bringing ofF some good movements. St. Patrick’s then launched an attack from a set scrum at half-way, and Brinsden, the centre, made a brilliant opening, but he delayed his pass and was smothered. The greens hammered the yellow line, and success came when a Kowhai forward got offside, Andrew placing the ball between the uprights to put St. Patrick’s 3 points ahead. Kowhai attacked strongly. A high kick was mulled by the St. Patrick’s full-back, and Dunne, following up fast, snapped up, and made a strong run to ground the ball under the posts. He converted the try. Half-time sounded with i,o difference in the score On the resumption. the Kowhai backs attacked and Harford dummied Id's way across to score in the corner. The kick at goal failed. Play now became very bright, both sides playing entertaining football. St. Patrick’s penned the yellows in their twentyfive for a long period, and from a loose forward rush L. Zaloum picked up and dived over to score. The conversion failed. St. Patrick’s strived hard to score again, but the final whistle sounded with the scores: Kowhai 8. St. Patrick’s 6. Mr A. Jewett was the referee. KIA TOA v. PIRATES. Making their first appearance for the season, Kia Toa defeated Pirates at the Showgrounds by 8 points to 3. The game was hard, with some good individual work. The teams were: — Kia Toa (blue and black).—Andrews, Thornton, Ladyman, M aite, Oliver, L. Jones, C. Good runs by by Wheatley and Lane returned play to half-way, where it remained for some time. Evans failed to goal for Pirates in a handy position and Kia Toa forced. Pirates again staged a good forward rush, which was spoilt by offiside play. Tho spell ended without either side having scored. Pirates staged the best back movement so far on the resumption, the ball coming out to Wheatley_ on the wing, and lie made a determined dash to score in the corner. His attempt at goal failed. Good fare is promised at the Showgrounds to-morrow when the Rugby competitions will bo resumed.
