WEST END SCHOOL.
The first meeting of the newlyelected West kind School Committee was held on \t ednesday, Mr G. Tremaine presiding. Alsu piesent were Messrs \V. Collins, A. I'enKeth, A. C. McLean, W. Sell w a he, J. H. JDalziel, A. hi. Pinfold and L. Hogg (secretary). The headmaster (Mr hi. W. Jackson) was also in attendance.
lietore the business of the meeting commenced, the chairman welcomed to the committee Mr Schwa be, wlio had been a member some 18 months ago, but had since severed his connection with committee affairs. A motion of sympathy was accorded the relatives ot the late Mr E. tL. Owtram, members standing a moment in silence. The headmaster’s report, dated May 6, stated that the roll number stood at 391, with an average attendance tor the week of 301.5. Generally the health of the children was good. L>r. Elizabeth Gunn had visited tne scliuol on April 1 7 and had examined the children ot Standard 2. Mr E. H. Eange, agricultural inspector, had also visiteu the school. , , , , „ The chairman stated that the ball had been held and there had been an increase ot £3 Ids (id in the sale of tickets from the school when compared with the figures for last year. There had been tickets sold at the door to the value of £39 10s, and the proceeds from the cake competition Had been £4 Is 6d. The nett, proceeds from the function had amounted to £59 18s. Commenting on the position disclosthe chairman stated. that the function had been a very successful one and had been quite the best tor some years. All were agreed that it had been a wise move to use the large hall at the Showgrounds. Accounts amounting to £34 iis ltu were passed for payment. Appreciation of the services ot Mr S. IV. Oliver, a past secretary of the committee, was recorded on the nun-ut-es. A vote of thanks was also accorded the members of the ladies’ committee and Miss E. Oleary, infant mistress, for services rendered at the ball, and members of the teaching staff lor their assistance. Mr Schwabe brought to the notice of the committee the excellent results that had been obtained by pupils of the school in the annual competitions of the Manawatu branch of the ltoya, Life-Saving Society and it was resolved to place on record appreciation of the services rendered in this connection by Messrs T. E. Douds and A. M. Stevenson, teachers responsible tor the children’s training.
