IN THE BALANCE
ITALY AND LEAGUE. POSSIBLE REPERCUSSIONS. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received May 14, 1.55 p.m. ROME, May 13. Italy’s membership of the League, of Nations hangs in the balance, pending Baron Aloisi’s explanation of the situation to Signor Mussolini. Signor Gayda, in the Giornale D’ltalia, declares: Spite is the sole remaining purpose of sanctions. Italy’s first step in considering this is the withdrawal of her delegation from Geneva. This will precede an examination of her position in the world with or without the League.
Signor Gayda emphasises that Italy will never collaborate with the sanctionist Powers until sanctions are abandoned. She can usefully associate herself with many non-sanc-tionist countries. The breach between Italy and Geneva may become a fundamental breach in Europe.
