MARKETING BILL
PASSED BY UPPER HOUSE. AMENDMENT DEFEATED. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, May 14. The Legislative Council met at 11 a.m. and went into committee on the Primary Products Marketing Bill. The Leader of the Council (Hon. M. Fagan) assured Hon. F. Waite that he could not say what would be the differentiation in price between butter and cheese. Hon. J. Alexander protested against the method by which the liability ,of any person accused of selling dairj T produce at anything except a fixed price 'should be determined. Mr Fagan said the clause was necessary, as without it the Bill would be weakened. The Government had to protect itself against “bootlegging” of any description. Hon. It. Masters moved an amendment providing for a referendum of dairy farmers before the Bill was passed, the cost of the referendum to be borne by the Dairy Board. Mr Fagan submitted that the amendment involved an appropriation and should be ruled out of order. After a brief discussion the Chairman of Committees (Hon. J. A. Hanan) ruled the amendment to be in order. The amendment was defeated by 23 votes to 10 and the Bill was read the third time and passed. The Council rose at 12.35 till tomorrow.
