IN APPRECIATION

MR J. A. NASH’S SERVICES,

PRESENTATION TO BE MADE.

Prompted by a recent deputation of I prominent citizens, tbe Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford) called a public meeting in tbe City Council Chambers yesterday afternoon to enable an opportunity to be given to formulate plans for a public presentation to Mr J. A. Nash in recognition of the splendid service he rendered the city during the period of 17 years in which he represented the Palmerston electorate in Parliament. There was a very representative attendance at the meeting, which elected a committee to arrange for a function to take place at the Opera House, when it is intended to make tlje presentation of a -purse of sovereigns. Mr Mansford said the meeting had been called at the instance of a number of citizens who felt that some recognition should lie made of Mr Nash’s services to the city since 1918. He had done his duty without fear or favour, and his record of public life had probably never been surpassed in the Doj minion—nor was it likely to be. It was , felt that citizens would welcome an opportunity to show their appreciation of his service to the city and district. Mr Mansford read a large number of apologies for absence, and stiggested that the meeting should at once decide on the form the presentation should take. He suggested that it should be a function in the Opera House. The meeting resolved in favour of the Mayor’s suggestion, which was supported by Mr A. J. Graham, it being decided to make Mr Nash the presentation of a purse of sovereigns. Mr W. F. Durward suggested that the public be invited to subscribe to a shilling" fund—not, of course, preventing large donations being innde by those who desired to do so. Mr Mansford said he understood that was the | intention. L. The meeting, then elected the followring committee, to decide the date and ■I "exact nature of the function, with Mr as chairman and Mr Graham as deputy-chairman Messrs H. IS. Kissling (secretary), C. G. Hayward, 11. L. U. Aitchison, J. McLeod, W. F. Hui-ward, O. Monrad, P. M. Moran, \V. Park N. Blnekmore, Colonel J. H. Whyte, Mesdaines W. F. Field, W. Mouldey, and W. J. Phillips. Many of those present signified their intention of contributing a considerable amount to the presentation fund.
