FEILDING

ANZAC DAY SERVICES. An indication of the proposals for Anzac Day services in Feilding, this month, was given by the-Mayor (Mr T. Collins) on Wednesday night,, when he said that he had been approached by representatives of the Feilding Ministers’ Association with the suggestion that the citizens’ service be held in the morning at 10 o’clock instead of 2 o’clock in the afternoon. Mr Collins said he had pointed out that there was a possibility of this conflicting with the returned soldiers’ service, which commenced at 10.30 with the march to St John’s Church, and under no circumstances would he be a party to any alteration wh}ch would affect the soldiers’ service. He had been in touch with representatives of the Feilding R.S. A. and both they and the speaker had been assured by the Ministers’ Association that the soldiers’ service would not be interfered with. An invitation would be extended to the returned men to attend the 10 a.m. service and then proceed to their own service. It had eventually been decided to try the Ministers’ Association’s suggestion this year and, if it was not successful, the present system of holding the citizens’ service in the afternoon would be reverted to next year.

CENSUS FIGURES. RETURNS NOT COMPLETED. That the census figures for Feilding would not be available until after Easter was the information given by Mr J. B. Purcell when approached regarding returns for the local area. Mr Purcell added that although 16 sub-enumerators were at work, they had not been able to complete the task so far. In almost every instance they had had to scrutinise and complete the census forms, while in some cases the householder had done nothing at all and had awaited the return of the enumerator to assist in filling in the required details. Weather conditions had also been a hindrance, and the country sub-enumerators had not had an easy time. Mr Purcell mentioned that one sub-enumerator, working along the Rangitikei River boundary, had the hood of his car blown off; another had his car blown off the road into an unused metal pit, while he was collecting, while a third man in the Pohangina area had been involved in a collision. This had all caused delays, but not nearly so great as that brought about by householders not filling in the . returns.

Mr Purcell stated that he could not make any announcement until the final figures had been communicated to the Government Statistician, and this would not be until after Easter. PERSONAL. Mr E. Goodbehere, of Feilding, was reappointed assessor for the Feilding Borough Council at Wednesday night’s meeting of the council. Miss D. On behalf of the staff, Mr E. Cook, manager,! presented Miss Simpson with an oak dinner wagon and voiced his appreciation ofj the loyal services he had received from her during her four years with the firm.
