MARTON, March 14. The annual meeting of holders of shooting and fishing licenses in the Rangitiliei district was held last evening, there being an attendance of 35. Mr G. L. Marshall was elected to the chair. A presentation was made to the 1 tiring secretary, Mr G. T- Avery, in recognition of his services in 28 years tenure of the position, to sportsmen in If angitihei. Prior to his departure from Marton to the Chief Post Office at Palmerston North, Mr S. R. Holmes was met by his fellow members of the staff of the Marton Post Office and presented with a canteen of cutlery as an expression of the esteem in which he is held. For ten years Mr Holmes had been mail room supervisor at the Marton office and he has taken a commendab’e part in the activities of the Fire Brigade and the Boy Scout Troop, in addition to a number of sports bodies. The postmaster (Mr G. W. Brown) said he had found Mr Holmes capable and conscientious in every respect, and always Willing to carry out the many tasks Which had come his way. Mr S. J. Sut- ! livan said that there was no member of the staff who would not miss Mr Holmes and his kindly influence, particularly where the younger officers were concerned. The departure of Mi Holmes Would mean a loss not only to the Marton office but to outside interests as well. Other speakers Were Messrs A. E. S. Crozier, S. C. Matthews and W. L. Newman. Mr Holmes returned thanks and said his relations with the members of the staff, alid with the public are Marton, had always neen very pleasant. The annual competition for the Gonville Cups between teams representing the Gonville Bowling Club and combined teams from Marton, Hunterville and Bulls was played on the Marton green on Saturday afternoon, _ Gonville proved the victors, winning by 160 points to 135. While cycling from Bulls on Saturday evening to the place of his employment on the Bulls-Turakina Road, a youth, Philip Rayner, son of Mr j and Mrs H. Rayner, of Marton, had a nasty fall from his machine and Was taken to hospital, in Marton in an •unconscious condition. The ' funeral of the late Miss Beth Sherriff, the second daughter of the late Mr H. Sherriff, and Mrs Sherriff, of Marton, on Saturday afternoon, was attended by a large number of relatives and friends. Rev. J. H. Hall officiated. The casket was adorned with a number of beautiful floral emblems, including those from the Stratford Hospital Board, Marton Borough Council, matron and nursing staff of Stratford Hospital, former colleagues at 5 the training school (Hawera Hospital), ahd Braemar Hospital (Wanganui).
