VICTORIAN BIRTH RATE.
LOWEST EVER RECORDED. Although the number of marriages i last vea.r was the highest in the hisjtorv'of Victoria, the Government I Statist (Mr O. Gawler) announced re- ) cently that- the serious decline in the birth rate had continued, until a rate I of 15.16 per 1000—the lowest ever re--1 corded—had been reached. There were 15,409 marriages, and onlv V .. 884 births. Tn 1931 there were only 10,182 marriages and 30,332 hirUis. Despite a record low birth-rate, the infantile death-rate was the lowest but one ever recorded. There were 1143 deaths of infants, which reduced the rate to 41.17, compared with 44.63 in 1934.
