CHURCH IN GERMANY

CONFLICT REINVIGORATED. ARRESTS OF OFFICIALS. AN OUTSPOKEN CARDINAL. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received February 12, 10.10 a.m. BERLIN, Feb. 11. The Church and State conflict is again coming into the foreground. The Secret Police struck another blow at the Catholic youth organisations when they arrested Monsignor Volker, the president, also about fifty other important officials. It is believed the arrests reflect Nazi impatience over the compromise of the Church on the youth question, and are regarded as a step towards the suppression of all lay Catholic activity. Two of the largest churches in Munich were crowded to hear Cardinal Faulliaber denounce the anti-Catholic tendencies of Nazism and the unchristian influence brought to bear on the youthful members of the Nazi Party. The sermon was relayed from the church in which the Cardinal preached. Thousands waited to see the Cardinal and the ex-Crown Prince Ruppreclit of Bavaria arrive. The streets were impassable. isolated individuals attempting to shout, “Hail Hitler!” were quickly suppressed.
