PAHIATUA, Jan. 24. The monthly meeting of the Pahiatua Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor (Mr J. IX Wilson) presiding. Also present were Crs. W. March, J. O’Brien, N. Britland, J. Sturton, S. X. Siddells, A. B. Donald and W. Brown. Before commencing the business, the Mayor moved a resolution expressing deep regret at the news of the death of the King and expressed the council’s deepest sympathy with members of the ltoyai Family. iVlessrs Dunea’n and Cotterill, solicitors, of Christchurch, wrote concerning the propound purchase of one-eighth of an acre section, portion of the Balfour Estate, required by the council for water supply purposes. The conditions of sale were:—The price to be £100; there to be reserved to the owners an easement giving an unrestricted right to use water flowing above or below the surface of the rest of the property for all purposes connected with the estate, whether it continues to be worked as a whole or as a subdivision. The trustees also desired a guarantee that they would not be liable to contribute toward the cost of any dividing fence or to take such steps as may be necessary to prevent any injury to stock. The council was of the opinion that the price asked was unreasonable and it also objected to the stipulation regarding water rights. It was decided to send the Mayor to Christchurch to discuss the matter with the trustees and endeavour to come to some better agreement. Accounts amounting to £5134 13s od were passed for payment. It was decided to effect repairs to the footpaths in Cambridge, Dawson and Princess Streets. It was also decided, in connection with the Huxley Stieet drain to build a concrete culvert 2o feet long across the drain at the intersection of Cambridge and Huxley Streets The treasurer (Mr Lovelock) reported that the amount of rates struck for the 1935-36 rear was £4104 8s 6d, and that rates collected to date amounted to £IBB2 11s 6d; Hus left a balance to be collected of £22/1 Its. Notice under the provisions of section 76 of the Rating Act, 1925, nad been given, notifying ratepayers that the additional 10 per cent, penalty would bo added to alt rates remaining unpaid on February 14.
