SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP., WON BY F. LIVINGSTONE. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 18. F. Livingstone (Onehunga) won tlie singles championship at the New Zealand bowling tournament this morning, beating Hardlev (West End, Auckland), 16—12, after a close and thrilling contest. Livingstone’s first New Zealand title was well deserved, following on consistent play throughout the tournament. His win was exceedingly popular with the large gallery which watched the game at the St. Albans After tlie game, Livingstone said that the most thrilling part of the game for him was the last three heads where, on the third to last, he had lo draw shot to get three up on Hardley. He paid a tribute to his opponent's ability, and said that towards the end of" the game Hard ley was playing particularly well. It was a most thrilling game, marked by the most perfect drawing seen in the tournament. Another single put him on top. but on the ninth Livingstone drew .four perfect shots, which Hardley failed to shift. With half the board covered, Livingstone had added another by just resting Hardley’s shot out with his last howl. Then a" well placed brace to Hardley brought him to within a point of his opponent. Both men were right at the top of their form now, and round after round of applause greeted their efforts. The thirteenth and fourteenth heads went to Livingstone, with singles, leaving him with a margin of four. Then Hardley took a Brace. Livingstone retaliating on the sixteenth with a perfectly drawn single, his last bowl just cutting Hardley out of the shot. A single to Hardley followed on the next head and then Livingstone followed suit on the eighteenth, leaving him three ui> and three to go. He added another single on the twentieth, leaving bis opponent wanting three to tie on tlie last head. Though lying one on this head, Hardley burnt the head. It was of no avail, however, as Livingstone lav within a few inches of the kitty with his third bowl and Hardley failed in both his efforts to draw it out. Details: PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP. Second round.
