CROSSING SAFETY

BRIDGE FOR LONGBURN. PROGRAMME ANNOUNCED. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Sept. 28. The first instalment ot 27 level crossings has been selected for elimination by the Main Highways Board, the Unemployment Board, and the Railway Board, according to an announcement made to-day by the Minister of Public Works (Hon. J. Bitoliener). He said that as soon as the first instalment oi the programme was in hand a further selection would be made in order that the preliminary work for the whole task can be completed. The work will be put in hand almost immediately. As already announced, it is proposed to spend £120,000 per annum tor the next three years on tins scheme. , The crossings to be dealt with in the first instalment are as follow: Whangarei district. —Two _ crossings south of Hikurangi, which it is proposed to eliminate by deviating the highway,, and the Hoteo crossing oi which an overbridge is proposed. Auckland district. —Tirau crossing, Te Kauwliata crossing, Huapai crossing (North Auckland), Hopu Hopu crossing (near Taupiri), for overbridges are proposed, and Waihi, where a deviation will be made. Tauranga district. Turakenga crossing (near Rotorua , where a subwav is considered the best solution. Napier district.—Maharahara crossings (south of Dannevirke). There are two crossings close together at this point and a highway t deviation ml eliminate these for all traffic, ® x ®fPt an inconsiderable amount of local tra - fic. Also the Waitangi crossings (south of Napier); the re-location of the new Waitangi wash-out bridge, at present in hand, will eliminate these crossings. Taumarunui district. —Oio mossing south of Taumarunui) and Pinana crossing (south of Taumarunui) toi which overbridges are proposed. Stratford district.— Normanby crossing, for which an overbridge is proposed ; Ngaere crossing, for whitvi either a subway or an overbridge is proposed. „ . T . Wanganui district. —Ivai Iwi crossing (north of Wanganui), for which an overbridge is proposed. OVERBRIDGE AT LONGBURN.

Wellington, district.—Porirua 'crossing and Longburn crossing, for which overbridges are proposed ; Raraparaumu crossing, for which either an overbridge or a subway is proposed. Grey mouth district.—Brunner crossing (north of Greyniouth), for which an overbridge is proposed. Christchurch district.— Styx crossing (north of Christchurch) and Sockburn crossing (south of Christchurch), for which overbridges are proposed.

Dunedin district.—-Kartigi crossing and Palmerston crossing, for which overbridges are proposed; Deborah crossing, for which a subway is proposed. Invercargill district.—Lorneville crossing, for which an overbirdge is proposed. The. Minister added that there are special features in the design for each of the above crossings.
