FINES OF £25 IMPOSED

Fines of £25, with costs 10s, were imposed by Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., at to-day’s sitting of the Magistrate’s Court on two men who had pleaded guilty to breaches of the Gaming Act. Stanley Betlaw Gallichan was charged that on September 28, ho had used the premises of L. Carter, hairdresser and tobacconist, of Broadway, as a common gaming house, while Leslie William Carter was charged .that, being the occupier of the premises,, he did permit them to be used as a common gaming house. Mr A. W. Tortt, Who appeared for the two defendants, entered a plea of guilty. Detective-Sergeant Bickerdige stated that the police had visited the premises on Saturday morning and had found Gallichan in a special cubicle which had a telephone and a radio installed therein. There had been race cards lying on the table. Gallichan hau admitted that he was carrying on betting. Further, Carter admitted that he know that betting was being carried on and had been for the past foul months. Both men had been, quite candid about the matter. Counsel explained that Carter had only recently commenced in business, while Gallichan had only been accepting small bets for the convenience or customers. The bets were laid oft with bookmakers. Carter had been informed bv the police at the time that he would not be 'required, but as lie wished to he perfectly frank and candid with the police lie had appeared voluntarily. The Magistrate remarked that as “they were new men and this was their first offence” he would impose a fine of £25, with costs 10s on each charge. A week was allowed in which to make the payment.
