CHILDREN IN SMASH.
DISPLAY OF INITIATIVE. Per Press Association. INVERCARGILL, Sept. 27. Reference to the splendid behaviour of the 61 children w|jo were involved in the Edendale train smash was made at a meeting of the Southland Education Board to-day by Mr H. Smith, who said the boys on the train had been coolness itself and had rendered every possible assistance. He was very proud of the children. Mr W. Bell supported Air Smith’s remarks and referred particularly to the presence of mind of the girls. When all the children had been got out and the train was on fie, one of the girls had gone back and thrown out all the belongings. The chairman (Mr S. Rice) also commended the action of the children. They had been taught discipline and a sense of duty, he said, and it was gratifying that they had displayed initiative and presence of mind in going about the work of relief in such a splendid way.
