the manawatu association. MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the committee of the Manawatu Automobile Association was held last evening, Mr N. H. Mackie presiding. Also present were Messrs E l . Collis, M. A. Eliott, E. R. R. Holben, 8. Rosvall, E. S. OlJiver and R. T. Jaggard. Apologies for absence were voiced for Dr. E. C. Barnett and Messrs W. 11. Brown, A. W. Just, J. R. Hughes and H. E. Edmunds.

j The secretary 'of the Manawatu Radio Club advised that the service officer would be welcome to give a few minutes’ lecture during the children’s session.—Received. The secretary of the North Island Motor Union reported that the Transport Department had decided to review the registration and licensing forms in an effort to secure a simplification. —R eceived. The committee of the Willard Children’s Home wrote conveying appreciation of the association’s donation of £l.—Received.

Messrs Gifford Moore, Ongley and Tremaine advised that the Sisters of Mercy were prepared to let that portion of the Broadway property now used for parking cars to the association as a parking area, on a monthly tenancy at a rental of £1 a week. — Mr Mackie said the present area was meeting the demand and he recommended that in the meantime no action be taken. This course was decided upon.

The City Council advised, in connection with various matters that had been addressed to it by the association, that, these had been referred to the traffic manager for a report, and when this was received the association would be communicated with further. Likewise, the association’s letter concerning the small number of stickers on vehicles indicating that such had passed the test regarding brakes and lights had been received bv the council. Mr Mackie stated that he and Mr S. I. McKenzie (secretary) had been very courteously received bv Mr W. B. Cameron, chairman of the council’s transit committee. He recommended that no further action bo taken in the meantime, and this course was adopted.

Mr Mackie was appointed the association’s representative on the recently formed Safety First Committee. The chairman intimated that advice had been obtained that it was intended to complete the sealing of the San-don-Himatangi highway. ; SERVICE OFFICER’S REPORT, j The service officer (Mr V. Crichton) ■ reported, inter alia, as follows:—“The additional signs allocated up to the present time will soon be ready for erection, and this work will be carried out within one month. After the prolonged floods at Wliirokino, several signs were damaged, but these .have now been replaced. A member has expressed the opinion that, owing to improvements in road conditions and the power developed by modern cars, with the consequent increased speed, consideration should be given to placing railway crossing signs further away from the actual crossing. Every oppor-

tunity is' to be given members to comply' with the regulations regarding brakes and headlights. Arrangements have been made to visit the country districts and the Showgrounds have also been reserved in order that.members may avail themselves of this service. Thirty-one. new members were enrolled and also 40 subscriptions collected.” —The report was adopted.
